Hymn to the Khthonic Deities Upon a Death
Thanatos, God of Death, Oh You who deals out mortality’s toll, We ask for Your kindness. May You take Your due As kindly as possible To grant our troubled minds rest On the passage of loved ones Into the Underworld. Spare all that You can From Your sisters’ dread hands And take the souls You gather With gentleness For our sakes.
Oh Zeus Moiragetes, May You lead with wisdom and care. As you direct those three daughters of Yours, Think kindly on us mortal ones. If their fate is unjust and untimely, Stay off Atropos’s sharp shears And spare our life threads. If the death is unwarranted in Your eyes, Speak to Lakhesis to extend the portion Alotted to that mortal as You deem fit. Atropos Diantaeae, Please look upon mankind with kindness And heed Your Father’s counsel. Zeus Moiragetes, If the life’s fate is just and as it should be, Do not be swayed by our weak mortal pleas. Excuse our fear of death and fate As the mortal weakness it is And work as You see fit. Clothés, do not falter in your weaving Only for our mortal pain and weakness. For You, Theae Archaeae, see more than We mortals ever have, And You see the future’s design better than we.
Hermes Khthonios, Meet Thanatos as He works And guide those souls. Oh joyful one, mischievous but kind, Bring them comfort and peace As You guide them to the Underworld. Be there for those who have passed on And give them peace In this, their final journey. Remind them that they were never alone Not even in these final moments And be a comfort to them. In these days, When not all know of the toll, Be kind to those souls And pay the cost for them Or make a plea on their behalf To soften the Ferryman.
Kharon, dread Ferryman, Be there with those who have passed And show kindness To us mortals who forgot the fee Because of the ignorance of others In days long gone. Ferryman, take them across To the side of the restful dead. We neglected You for too long, But be kind and do not hold A grudge against us. Those who know to pay Will ensure that is it done. Until then, Be merciful and forgiving And let all find their rest.
Haides Polyxenus, Continue to be the gracious host Of all mankind After their breath has left their body. Be a just and fair king to them So those mortals still living who mourn May have peace of mind, Knowing our loved ones Are in Your domain and in Your hospitality.
Persephone Daeira, Oh Wise Queen Below the Earth, May You serve Your role as well. If justice has eluded a soul, Let them find it at Your dread hands. If justice has been denied, May You loose the Furies Upon the ones who deserve it. Persephone Praxidice, Rule as You see fit And grant vengeance and justice As needed. And should we need Your aid, Speak kindly of us to Your husband And remind Him that Just like Orpheus, We too sometimes need a moment of grace.
Dark gods, Those who dwell below, Rulers of the Underworld, Be kind to us mortals in our hours Of need and weakness And guide us in the end to peace. Let us be at ease Knowing that our souls rest In your hands in the days After the breath has left our bodies.

A Khthonic Prayer
I sink to my knees And rap loudly on the ground. I place my palms face down Towards the home of My beloved khthonic deities.
Gods and Goddesses of the Inner Earth, May these prayers reach you! These negative thoughts won't cease! My chest has become too tight And my stomach grows more tangled With each breath I take. The air in my lungs tastes stale And my body feels far too heavy.
If ever I have pleased you, Please grant me a moment of respite And shine a light on my inner darkness! If ever I have honored your name, Please show me a way out Of this hellscape that I call my mind! If ever my offerings have reached you, Please help me breathe more deeply And calm the nerves in my stomach!
O' Wise Father Hades; O' Compassionate Mother Hekate; Gentle Lord Thanatos And Friendly Lord Hypnos; May glory shine upon your names!
I see a lot of people talking about pouring offerings on the ground for persephone and never eating/drinking an offering. I've spoken to her through my pendulum and she didn't have any issue with it.
People talk about that because traditionally it was believed that you should never consume the offerings of a Khthonic deity. Whether that holds today is something each of us has to decide on our own.
Although deities like Persephone and Hermes are special cases in that they don’t exclusively dwell in The Underworld so aren’t always khthonic. Meaning even if we are to believe in the old tradition of not consuming offerings to khthonic deities, Persephone would likely be one of the exceptions to that rule
Ritual For Devoting to Persephone
Keep in mind that this is just the ritual I performed to devote myself to her and that I'm still very new to this!
Materials Needed:
One Candle/Incense/Essential Oil That Reminds You of Persephone
A Sigil For Persephone Written On a Scrap Of Paper (I'll Show The Sigil I Made Later In The Post)
A Lighter/Match/Candle
A Container Of Water That Can Be Used To Extinguish A Flame
Twelve Pomegranate Seeds
Step One: Cleanse Yourself
You can cleanse yourself in whatever way feels best for you! I personally just washed my hands really well with some pomegranate scented dish soap.
Step Two: Adorn Yourself With Anything That Reminds You of Her (Optional)
I personally spent the whole day wearing colors that reminded me of her (red and purple). I also wore a flower bracelet I had dedicated to her as well as I pomegranate ring that I wear in honor of her. I also chose to veil as a devotional act to her. This is a completely optional step that I did simply to feel more connected with her.
Step Three: Light Candles and/or Incense
Defusing essential oils also works! I personally recomend anything mint, lavender, or floral scented. I lit a pomegranate scented candle I had in honor of her.
Step Four: Prayer
Say a prayer to Persephone, explaining who you are and what you intend to do. It can be as personal or as simple as you want! Call upon her to be present for the ritual and be sure to explain that you wish to become her devotee, what that means to you, and why you want to become her devotee.
Step Five: Burning the Sigil
Take a sigil made in honor of Persephone (it can be a sigil for strengthening the bond between you and Persephone, a sigil specifically for devoting yourself to Persephone, or just a sigil that invokes her, it's up to you!) And burn it before dropping it into your container of water, which should extinguish the flame of the burning sigil. This is the sigil I made and used in honor of Persephone
Step Six: Eating the Pomegranate Seeds
Take six out of the twelve pomegranate seeds and eat them, one by one, in honor of Persephone. A good thing to do would be to say one thing you are thankful to Persephone for as you eat each one! But this is not neccessary.
Step Seven: Burying the Pomegranate Seeds
Take the remaining six pomegranate seeds and bury each of them, one by one. If you can't bury them, dispose of them in some other way! Simply throwing them away is fine. A good thing to do as you do this would be to name a way you hope Persephone will help or guide you for each seed.
Step Eight: Prayer (Again)
Thank Persephone for her time and say anything else you wish to say to her!
And That's It!
You're a Persephone Devotee!
Again: This is just the ritual I did and it isn't for everyone, but I hope it helps someone!
Hey I like your blog!!! I'm new to worshiping Hades. I was wondering if you have any advice for a beginner? :)
Aw thank you :)
Well, in my personal experience I discovered the Hellenic paganism (and a lot of other beliefs) thanks to Hades. Since I was a child I would read about greek mythology and feel something nice when I read the myths related to Hades. I started to worship Him without knowing anything at all (pretty impulsive tbh)
My personal advice is to read, read a lot of stuff related to Him like this or this post
Hades is a Khthonic Deity (related to agriculture, earth and underworld) so I tend to give Him offerings and libations near the ground. You can bury a food offering or make the libation (pouring liquid) into the ground/soil. If you can´t do this, you could make Him a playlist of songs or write Him a poem (or a letter).
You could do devotional activities like:
Burning a candle
Remember those who died
Bring Him flowers as an offering
Pet a dog
Drink mint tea (or use something that smells like that)
Enjoy silence
Paint your nails (I love painting them in black as I think about Him)
I hope I helped :3
my khthonic altar for this wonderful samhain night! it is my first samhain since moving out so it was extra special to have my altar in my main living area instead of on a shelf in my bedroom at my parents'
Hey beloved parent! Sorry if you aren’t up to questions atm, but I wanted your input on something because I value your voice. I find that I most often receive signs from death deities. My mom passed away about ten years ago and I was wondering if you think the two may be related? Like, they’re trying to help me move past it? Or do you think it might just be an odd coincidence? Thanks and have a good day 💚✨
Hello, my love! From my experience, death deities do show up when we have shadows around death that we need to deal with and heal from. So it is possible, but only you can say for sure. If your gut is leading you this way then go with it! Also regardless if you feel you haven’t properly healed from losing your mother then I say work with the deities anyway.
