I think I can safely say this is the best panel in all of the Kid Lucky comics. Look at how cute this is

Every mention of Pa Dalton in "Oklahoma Jim" and what we can gather from it (because I feel like analyzing shit):

Ma Dalton, Pa Dalton and their sons lived in Mushroom City before Ma Dalton settled in Cactus Junction (where we see her in her debut album).

Pa Dalton was telling his offspring that bandits are free and law is for weenies, which tracks, given that the whole (well, most of the) Dalton Clan are proud bandits who bond over crime activities.

Pa Dalton was telling his sons stories about his own heists and robberies, probably to prepare them for the day when they will be old enough to join the family business.

Dalton family is well-known in Mushroom City and it seems that the folk here aren't fully aware who this family really is, given that they see Joe, Jack, William and Averell as normal and cutie-patootie kids and think that Ma Dalton will be devastated that her sons tried to steal a calf.

At some point the Mushroom City sheriff arrested Pa Dalton. His wife in retaliation slipped rattlesnake into sheriff's bed. Pa was sent to the nearest penitentiary, and Ma recently visited him to bring some prison escape tools. This is why Dalton bros are left all alone and their parents can't intervene with this whole Oklahoma Jim/going to school mess.

Additionally we learnt from other, older albums that Joe is the most similar to Pa Dalton, temperament-wise (Ma Dalton) and that Pa Dalton died in dynamite explosition (Belle Starr).

But you know...

I can't help but imagine Pa Dalton coming back from prison, learning about boy's first robbery... and feeling angry, even sad that he wasn't present; that some random guy who ropped Joe, Jack, William and Averell into his scheme and used them as a shield, was there and not him. I don't know, I have a sneaking suspiction that he would be angry at Oklahoma Jim for 1) endangering his boys before they were even ready to rob a bank and 2) robbing him (pun intended) of such an important moment in his boys' life as their first hold-up.

And so he probably decided to pay Jim a visit and the youngster didn't get killed because the marshal came just in time to save him.

(I may or may not incorporate all of this in some kind of fanfiction.)
