i really love working with kids! gourdon and his gourd house
omg you guys
a couple of weeks ago i started teaching a kid’s class on mondays. the age range is 7-15, but fortunately i don’t think we have anyone over 12 (thank god, 7-12 is a huge range already). one of the younger ones is quickly becoming my favorite and tonight’s story is about him (also i’m calling him fave til i find a better nickname):
we were drilling some hip bridges for trap and roll mount escapes. they were supposed to look like this:
but nobody was getting it, so i grabbed an exercise ball and started going around setting it on the kids’ hips. i’d tell them to launch the ball into the ceiling and then turn onto their shoulder. most of them got the ball, most of them got the hang of it. i missed fave, though, and we moved on before he got a chance to try it. i work through the explanation, everyone pairs off, and as i’m looking around making sure everyone is partnered and getting started he and his partner come over. in the tiniest voice i’ve ever heard i hear,
“um, miss jessica? was there a reason i didn’t get to do the ball thing?” *he’s clearly trying to hold back tears and failing*
i say, “oh no, i’m sorry! i missed you when we were doing that, do you want to do it now?”
*his lips starts quivering and some more tears fall, but he’s still valiantly trying to keep it together* “no, that’s okay, we can wait until after class”
i tell him that i still have to check his bridge and to lie down while i grab the ball. he does, we do the thing, and he clearly feels much better about getting to do it. he then is able to do the rest of class without any problems
my heart, you guyyyyyyyysssssss
When I teach the kids class
There's always that one kid that's like
The kid also passed his test this weekend (9th kyu), along with his best dojo friend and fellow orange belt sidekick (whose belt always manages to come off ;). I love this pic because of their tiny feet in seiza but also because they look so similar. Even from behind, you can see the huge smile they both have on their faces - practice nights are always “entertaining” when the two of them run amok on the tatami.
❤️
subbed in for our kids class teacher tonight, same age group i do on mondays. i love kids, but omg they’re exhausting xD
i had the honor of being a 7yo’s first bjj class ever! she kept up pretty well, and bc we didn’t learn any submissions tonight i made sure that everyone she rolled with knew to only roll for positions. she had a great time, and i asked her after class what she thought. she paused for a moment, threw her head back, and said “AWESOME!!”
it was pretty great
