  There was a time when I had struck Australian wines from my list. I found them to be a whole lot of the same. The best word to describe them? Homogenized. Thankfully those days are over and Aussie wines are back on my table. My latest find is Kilikanoon Killerman’s Run Cabernet Sauvignon. This is one smooth wine with blackberry, coffee and chocolate flavours. It grabbed me from the first sip and I loved the depth and finish. When a wine lingers it makes me want more. This cab also got some serious love at the prestigious Decanter wine awards. A perfect red to serve with a beef stew or if you BBQ year round then pair it with burgers off the grill. Australia is the featured country at the 2015 International Wine Festival so I’m looking forward to finding more reds to recommend in February.

There’s more grunt than usual in a wine of its price, with a deep red-purple colour and a lifted aroma of dark fruits and peppermint. Kilikanoon uses barrel from 340-year-old oak tree for new flagship

Kilikanoon’s (tastings) new flagship red, to be released in September, was matured in a special French barrel named Chene Morat.

The barrel was one of 56 made from a single 340-year-old oak tree, which was sold by the French Government at an auction for more than 37,700 Euros.

The sale to the cooperage Tonnellerie Sylvain sparked outage that France could sell such an important part of its patrimony. The tree was planted during Colbert’s time in the forest of Troncais.

The new wine is a 2010 shiraz named The Revelation, and priced above Kilikanoon’s present flagship, the $250 Attunga Shiraz (tastings). The barrel was bought by Kilikanoon part-owner Nathan Waks on a visit to France.

Waks says the new wine happens to be Clare Valley shiraz, but “in future, it could come from any vineyard or region and any grape variety.” Expect the price to be nudging Grange (tastings) or Hill of Grace (tastings) levels.
