Director Guillermo del Toro and co-screenwriter Kim Morgan joined Alan K. Rode before the world premiere screening of the b/w director's cut of Nightmare Alley (2021) at the 2025 Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival in Palm Springs. The video includes a special message from actor Bradley Cooper who played Stanton Carlisle in del Toro's film.

Much like a mediocre carnival act, del Toro’s latest genre effort tells you all the clues in order to reveal the actual trick behind its neo-noir thrills. How the Oscar-winning Mexican-American filmmaker adapts author William Lindsay Gresham’s 1946 noir novel (after the 1947 original) weaves a methodical tale of Bradley Cooper’s sleazy WWII-era carnival barker figuring out his duplicitous craft before getting greedy and starting to believe his own lies.

Its study of manipulating the lower depths of twisted showbiz never goes beyond any typical grift by distracting us with an A-list cast before Cooper’s Stan gets into bed with Cate Blanchett‘s irresistible femme fatale of a corrupt psychiatrist. Actually, the abundance of talented famous faces playing seedy characters starts to get distracting as the pulpy psychological thriller unfolds.
