Rumi had a crush.
No matter how hard she tried to deny it, it was pretty obvious to Mira and Zoey how bad she had it for you.
She may have spent a lifetime lying to them, but lying about feelings was not her strong suit.
They saw way she got when on the phone with you, or how flustered she was every time she came back home after hanging out with you, barely able to string together a coherent sentence, looking delightfully dazed like she was riding in on cloud nine.
If that wasn’t having a crush, then they didn’t know what was.
Whenever given the opportunity, Rumi would talk about you at length. Though she’d clam up whenever they tried to prod into how you had her so flustered whenever she came home.
She would go into tangents about how cool and beautiful you were, how you were always there for her and had been her biggest source of support growing up—going completely flustered when asked what kind of support—and the way she talked about you also did nothing to alleviate the crush allegations.
Zoey suspected she was just embarrassed to admit that she had a crush on a straight girl, and honestly?? Fair. Zoey would have been just as reluctant to confess in her shoes.
The only thing was; Mira and Zoey hadn’t actually met you yet.
Sure, they knew enough about you to fill a library thanks to Rumi. But you were an elusive phantom in their lives.
At least until she finally introduced them.
They had been getting ready for a fan event, backstage in a dressing room touching up on makeup and doing fit checks when Rumi had charged into the room, sporting a wide smile stretched across a burning face.
“Guys, I want you to meet someone,” was all the warning she gave before pulling you into the dressing room.
Mira and Zoey decided right in that instant that Rumi had been drastically underselling how attractive you were. Because you were downright stunning enough that they had to do a doubletake.
The first of the two to recover, Mira stepped forward to offer a hand, “Good to meet you, Rumi’s told us a lot about you,” she said.
Other than being attractive, there hadn’t been anything about you that really stood out to either of the girls for why Rumi would react the way she did.
Was she just that much of a bisexual disaster that all it took was a pretty face? That didn’t seem like a Rumi-thing to do, but maybe this was just another side to their girl that they hadn’t gotten to see before now.
Overall, you were polite. You were nice and friendly as you talked with them, helping Rumi with her outfit even as they continued to get ready.
But there had been nothing of note for either Mira or Zoey to tell them why Rumi was always so weird about you. Maybe it was just the childhood friend angle taking affect here?
Everything had gone pretty normal for them, at least until Mira stopped Rumi from heading out of the room to grab an intern for some snacks. “Rumi—your eyeliner?”
Rumi cocked her head to the side, looking suspiciously innocent, “What about it?”
“You don’t have it on.”
“Oh,” Rumi said, looking sheepish as she brought a hand to her face, “Well, the thing is—I just hadn’t gotten to it yet. I’m still pretty bad about putting eyeliner on myself, can’t seem to get it right. You know how it is.”
Mira raised a brow. ‘Not good at it’ ‘Haven’t put it on yet’. That was the biggest lie she’s heard from Rumi in a while. She was the best out of the three of them when it came to eyeliner.
Her lie was especially bad, considering she had eyeliner on just this morning, had clearly cleaned it off at some point before bringing you to the dressing room. Why in the world would she lie about this?
The question was answered almost immediately.
“Rumi, come here,” you said.
Like an obedient, excited puppy, Rumi was in front of you in an instant.
By the way that she was vibrating in anticipation, it suddenly became very clear that she had messed with her eyeliner on purpose for…whatever it was that Mira and Zoey were about to witness.
You took a seat on the stool at Rumi’s mirror, already rummaging through her makeup bag until you found the eyeliner pen. With just a simple gesture, you had Rumi climbing onto your lap, practically straddling you, her expression both excited and flustered.
You took Rumi’s face in one hand, holding her by the jaws in a gentle grip to hold her head still.
“You just need to ask if you’re having trouble,” you scolded softly as you brought the eyeliner to her face. “You know I don’t mind lending you a hand.”
With that, you began applying eyeliner on Rumi, which wouldn’t have been so odd if it wasn’t being done with an odd amount of intimate tenderness that made Mira and Zoey feel like they were intruding on something.
You kept your one hand on her face, never gripping too tightly as you held her in place, murmuring to Rumi that she’s being such a good girl for you by holding still.
Good girl, Mira mouthed to Zoey, eyes wide at how Rumi vibrated harder against you, fighting every cell in her body not to squirm, unable to stop the goofy grin and burning blush.
They’d never seen Rumi like this. Didn’t know she could be like this.
("There's no way she's actually straight, right?" Zoey whispered as they watched. You were just putting makeup on Rumi, but it felt borderline erotic. "Right???"
"I mean, Rumi says she is," was Mira's helpless answer.)
It took no time at all for you to finish applying eyeliner and touching up Rumi’s makeup for her, but those minutes felt like hours for all three girls.
The smile you gave Rumi as you looked her up and down, examining your handiwork, it was downright criminal.
“There’s my pretty girl,” you hummed, hand tracing along Rumi’s arm with a light, ghostlike touch that left trails of goosebumps in its wake, “look at you, all ready to face the horde of adoring fans.”
“You always do such a good job,” Rumi said as she looked into the mirror, grinning wide at her reflection, though her friends suspected that it had less to do with your assistance and more to do with the praise. Her stubborn blush certainly leaned towards that.
You grinned again, “I try my best. Anything for a friend.”
The way you said friend, you might as well have pulled a trigger on Rumi. But she kept her smile on, even if it was a bit forced, as she slid off your lap. Her hands fidgeting with the edges of her outfit to keep from grabbing on to you.
But once she was on her own feet again, you had your hands on her, tucking stray locks of hair behind her ear and giving her that soft ‘Good girl’ comment again.
The effect those two words were having on Rumi could be seen from space.
All right, so they could understand why Rumi would have such a pathetic crush on you. If that kind of behavior was the norm, well, even the strongest soldiers would succumb eventually.
You weren’t even trying, and you were weirdly seductive.
It was only later that Mira and Zoey got to truly understand the kind of effect you could have on a person, that they understood why Rumi was barely able to hold it together when it came to you.
They had been goofing off in the dressing room as they unwound from the last two hours of excitement from the event, nothing out of the ordinary. Poking fun and making jokes.
Then Zoey went and made a self-depreciative comment.
Like a shark smelling blood, you had rounded up on her in an instant, it was clear you hadn’t been too happy with what she had said.
“What did you say?” you asked, your voice was firm—demanding—but still soft.
Zoey felt small under the sudden attention, casting a desperate look for answers or help to Rumi, but the older girl only shook her head, knowing exactly what was to come and happy to leave her to her fate.
“I—really, it’s not a big deal, it’s just…” she stammered, fidgeting her fingers together. Ducking her head once more, she muttered the joke again.
Your response wasn’t better the second time.
Taking Zoey’s face in your hand, you forced her to look you in the eyes. “No, no. We don’t do that,” you said softly. “I don’t want to hear you talking about yourself like that again, okay?”
Zoey, not trusting her words, could only nod. Her face was getting warm, more than warm, and she wondered to herself if you could feel how hot her face was burning under your attention.
She could feel Rumi and Mira staring at her from across the room, neither speaking up, neither wanting to interrupt whatever was happening here.
Apparently, her answer hadn’t been good enough for you. “Use your words, darling,” you ordered, your voice firm in it’s hushed quiet. “No. Better yet; I want to hear you saying something good about yourself, instead.”
With that, you maneuvered Zoey until she was seated on your lap similar to how Rumi had been, facing the dressing room mirror. Your arms were wrapped around her waist keeping her secure, keeping her from escaping.
“I—” Zoey began, her brain short-circuiting, feeling like she was about to combust. Was this how Rumi felt every time? If so, Zoey suddenly understood why she was always such a mess around you, Zoey was becoming a mess around you.
“Come on, pretty girl,” you urged, just as quiet, mouth practically ghosting a kiss on her neck as you said that with how close you were. Zoey’s brain fucking stuttered. “Say something nice about yourself; tell yourself something you like about yourself.”
She squirmed, feeling dizzy. “I…I like…” she desperately reached for something she could say, but it was hard, there was a hole in her head where all her thoughts were draining out of thanks to you.
“You can do it, sweetheart.”
Zoey couldn’t help but let out a whine, the way you were speaking was just unfair.
“I…like…I like my writing!” she managed to force out.
You didn’t let her go, “Good girl,” you praised, “can you say more?”
She’d say as much as you wanted, so long as you kept calling her a good girl like that.
“I like that I know so many random marine facts,” she continued helplessly, digging her nails into her thighs so she had something to grab. “I can tell you so many things about all sorts of sea creatures, not just turtles. And I— I’m the only one in the group who can skateboard—and I know all the Sunlight Sisters songs by heart.”
She kept like that, rambling one thing after another that she took pride, and each time you praised her, leaving her trembling where she sat, her face feeling like it was about to combust.
By the time that you let her stop, Zoey felt dizzy, felt like she was on fire.
Gaze snapping to Rumi, she stared at her friend for a good long moment before giving her a single nod. She understood, now. She understood so fucking well.
Mira was looking away, hand over her face to cover the blush she was sporting. “You two are too easy, she chided, all too aware that she was next and that she did not have the sort of willpower to not fold immediately.
