Mario Magus AU: The Tragedy of The Beanish Royal Family (16+)
I feel it's time to give you some of the lore now. Only a little bit, though, just a little bit for now.
I'll be telling the story in two parts, with one being Side A (aka Mario Bros' arc) and Side B (Beanish Arc) respectively.
This fanfic will go into Side B, detailing Peasley's backstory a little bit more.
Warning: This fanfic deals with trauma and violence towards children, as well as mentions of death, gore, blood, and vomit.
The birth of the royal twins was a joyous occasion. Twins were a rare occurrence in the Bright Realm. Beanish twins were almost unheard of, so it was shocking when the queen of all people gave birth to them.
A pair of twins, a boy, and a girl. The boy was named Peasley, and the girl, Peatunia. The two were born on the first day of spring, after a gruesome winter that killed thousands. They were a gift of hope for the remaining Beanish residents, albeit a very abnormal one.
Despite being twins, the two looked very different from one another. The boy, Peasley, had a normal complexion with curly purple hair just like his mother. However, his twin was much more pale and thin, despite eating more than her brother. The doctors figured out that she had albinism, but that didn’t explain the other quirks she had to her, along with pointy teeth that grew faster than her brother’s.
Not much was known about the twins for a while, as the queen suggested to keep them away from the public eye, repeating the words her husband, King Aspen, declared sternly. However, the two were seen outdoors occasionally in the castle courtyard, along with Queen Bean and her closest friend and royal mage, Cackletta.
The two would go missing on their first birthday and were missing for three days. On the second day, the Beanstar had disappeared. Peasley was found on the third day, but Peatunia had remained missing. King Aspen would declare that she was dead and that Cackletta was responsible. Queen Bean remained silent as Cackletta was sent to be executed, only for her to escape in the middle of the night, leaving nothing but a trail of blood and shards of the Beanstar in her cell.
The King would refuse to hold a funeral for her, and it became taboo to mention the princess’s name to the king or queen. For years, the kingdom pretended to forget the tragedy that befell the royal family. Security around the remaining twin, Peasley, grew ever strict, however against the king’s wishes. The proceeding years were relatively uneventful for a short while.
Peasley was twelve years old when tragedy struck again. The young boy collapsed in the middle of a training session with one of the military captains. The queen and her advisor found him suffering from a seizure as a wound suddenly opened from his head, before falling completely unresponsive.
Peasley was treated but fell into a coma due to his injuries. Upon investigation, there was little evidence to suggest that the captain was responsible for the incident. However, he would later resign from his post and was never seen again. Just a few hours after he was hospitalized, medics were called back to the castle where they found King Aspen dead.
According to the EMTs, and witness accounts from the advisor, King Aspen had gotten drunk and fallen off of one of the balconies. Injuries to his neck indicated that he had gotten his cape caught on the way down.
The queen was devastated. She stayed within the castle walls, blaming herself for the events. Once Peasley woke up, the once silent queen devoted herself to her son and her kingdom in hopes of preventing such an occurrence again. Despite her political prowess, she was shunned by her son, who took matters into his own hands once he turned fifteen.
Rumors of Cackletta reappearing spread like wildfire once Peasley hit his twentieth birthday, much to his chagrin. But after a few months, the rumors grew too loud, until one of her henchmen approached him.
Fawful, he called himself. He was barely half as tall as him, with a patchy hairline and a seemingly unmoving jaw with teeth that stuck out of his lips. He spoke with an odd, almost feminine voice, yet it was so scratchy that it was far from beautiful. It almost made his skin crawl every time he spoke. The teeth muffled some of the vowels, along with an increased smacking of saliva and lips, as if some of his teeth were swishing around in his cheeks every time he spoke.
The two sparred, fighting before Fawful gave up and ran away. Peasley slept well that night, only to wake up to his bedroom window broken, with only a note taped to the glass.
“Give us the star or else!”
Peasley ran out the window, noticing a shadow running through the bushes surrounding the castle.
Peasley followed the shadow, running afterward until he saw something that stopped him in his tracks.
“Oh, is that you, Peasley..?”
Cackletta’s skin was frayed and peeled away from the muscle and bone. Her hair was strewn about and matted to whatever was left of her scalp. She was a far cry from the few remaining photographs King Aspen failed to burn. Her dress was torn and bloody.
But, she calmly approached him. For a few moments, she was calm. Looking at him as if he was an old friend.
“It is…isn’t it?” Cackletta raised her hand, each tendril-like finger as long as a yardstick. “My, my, my…you’ve grown…so much…” The corners of her lips curled, stretching the remaining skin in her cheeks before her chest quivered.
“Heh…heh…heheh…”
In an instant, she threw the upper half of her body back, bending backward as she let out a blood-curdling scream.
“EEYAHAHAH-!”
Peasley darted away with his sword in his hands, running as fast as he could.
“GET BACK HERE YOU BRAT-!” Cackletta’s voice grew more hostile. “FAWFUL, GET HIM!”
It took almost hours to lose her and her toady. By now, the sun had begun to set on the kingdom. Peasley looked down, noticing the lace of his shoes torn, blood trickling down his leg.
He swore, before tearing off a piece of his tunic and tying it around the injury. He didn’t realize that he’d hurt himself until now. There wasn’t a trail that he could see, hopefully, she was long gone by now.
Peasley felt sick to his stomach when he kept seeing her face in his head. Despite being a rotting corpse, she was alive. Standing up on rotting arms and legs, as if the damage done to her body wasn’t there. He swallowed back the urge to vomit, before slowly returning to the castle.
Knowing her involvement in his sister’s disappearance, he did not tell the queen. Unfortunately, she would find out on her own soon enough.
