Concept, post season 4/pre season 5:

Arthur has repealed the ban on Magic alongside his Queen and trusted Knights.

His manservant has been acting unusually happy since, but won't share why.

Arthur is called to the throne room one day where a group of Druids are waiting for him.

Merlin stood to the back as was usual, keeping in the shadows as much as he could.

They announced that there was to be a celebration where they would crown the king of magic and all magical creatures at the lake of avalon at the spring equinox.

Arthur is confused and asks for them to elaborate. The druids tell of a man born of magic, born with golden eyes, a God in his own right, who would be recognized as such on the spring equinox at the lake. And Arthur and his court are invited as witnesses.

Once the druids are gone, all anyone can talk about is the tale spun and what it would be like to behold a young God.

Merlin wasn't thrilled, but knew it was coming. He'd fulfilled his destiny with Arthur so now it was his duty to protect and serve his own people; magical people and creatures.

Lancelot, Gaius, Gwaine and Leon had to keep from looking at Merlin during the announcement; they then begin trying to pester Merlin with questions.

He'd taken to avoiding everyone except Arthur for his duties.

He grabs the staff he's kept hidden all these years in his room and packs it amongst his things on his horse. It is quite the processional leaving Camelot the day before the equinox, as they make their way to the lake.

In the morning, the Druids are lined in rows along the waters edge, those from Camelot line up behind.

Then the creatures arrive. When the great dragon and a small white one land nearby, it causes some startled looks as many thought the large beast dead.

Merlin stood by Arthur for as long as he could, but he felt the pull. A druid turned around from the lake and announced '"its time".

Merlin knew his eyes were glowing, could feel his power like an ocean wave ready to crash through him. He couldn't hear those from Camelot as he walked toward the lake.

Freya stood in the water, glowing a soft blue hue, smiling at Merlin. He returned the smile, only barely keeping himself from running to her.

The closer he got, the less control he had on the magic surging in his body.

The druids were gasping as they felt the power and fell to their knees. Merlin dared to look back at his friends and couldn't help but smile at their shocked faces.

When he got to the waters edge, he himself knelt. Freya came forward and with words from the Old Religion, called forth a simple crown of plants.once it was placed on his head, the power rushed out and washed over everyone and everything.

His eyes remained golden as he had finally come into his full power.

Ideal Kings: a short meta comparison between Arturia Pendragon and Solomon.

It came to my attention that sometimes fans mistake Solomon’s issues and nature as similar to Arturia’s. I mean I love them both to pieces and they have a lot in common: both are selfless and have self-esteem issues, putting others before their happiness and needs, also a self-destructive nature. As rulers, they are known as ideal kings who kind of see on the eye as far as priorities are concerned were they speak about it (in a Banquet of the Kings, Solomon would align himself with her logic about how the king is a servant to the people, more or less). But there are differences between their characters and fundamental starting places that run deeper of the number of wives Solomon had and children he sired. While they share similitudes in their post-kingship stuff, they are thematically opposite in their lives as kings and their natures.

Let’s start spoiler free with Arturia who everyone knows and I think I have to say little about but:

This statement here sums her character. She was a girl, a very special one born with special traits given to her by Merlin, but a normal person with the capacity of love and sadness as everyone else. She loved her people and their happiness so much that, seeing what was happening around her (the famine, the strife, the deaths), she gave up her human happiness and freedom to become a king, hardening herself to do what she must to save her people. But underneath that steely mask and armor she was always that girl who loved the people and wanted nothing but peaceful days, disliking fighting and bloodshed. But she had to fight. She had to go to war. She had to kill. She became the “god of war” for her people, and becoming exceptionally pragmatic in sacrificing what she must to obtain the best outcome. She was called emotionless and acted, in general (except to her closest companions), as a ‘machine’ so to tell.

Tho, underneath Arturia was a young girl who suffered and bargained her heart and freedom for the sake of the people of Britain. Her self-destructiveness issues are somehow born from this failure to internalize and accept her sorrow is human and that she’s got those feelings despite being the king.

I’ve seen a lot of people thinking Solomon was the same, missing the whole point of his character concept. Spoilers for FGO below to speak of the King of Magic:

Solomon was described by David in his interlude as a man without freedom he didn’t choose to not have. Solomon himself said: 

“I wasn’t even free to get angry at my own lack of freedom.”

Let that statement sink. It wasn’t that Solomon acted robotic or cold and unfeeling like Arturia, he acted, as you can see, as a laid-back, goofy, wise and peaceful guy who was apparently lazy and loved his people and governed them justly. He acted that way. But his true nature was “God’s king mechanism”, a person born without developing individuality, ego, desires or feelings, that was moved by God’s voice in his actions until his death. He was empty. He acted like a person, but he was a machine. The opposite of Arturia who acted like a machine but was a person underneath. The people around them mostly misunderstood them and never actually helped them.

The ones who knew Arturia’s suffering lamented they couldn’t do anything but didn’t help her. The ones who noticed Solomon smiled to everything including the tragedies he witnessed with his all seeing-eyes, resented him and called him cruel rather than noticing he couldn’t do anything but smile.

As it was said, Solomon couldn’t have an Alter version, because there was nothing there to alter. Not even a fake like Jeanne Alter. He was truly empty. Arturia not only has an Alter, but that is born of her own deep-seated anger issues and impotent ire of her own heart rather than even some version that despite being latent couldn’t exist as Jeanne’s.

Arturia chose to try to be mechanical and ‘fair’ by ignoring who she was. Solomon was like that but acted like a person to govern because of God’s and people’s expectations (who weren’t aware of this). Only after he died, when he was summoned, Solomon began to acquire an ego, desires, and individuality by the bonds he forged, like Arturia allowed herself to act human. The good and the bad. Nonetheless, there’s a fundamental difference between building your individuality from zero as Solomon while Arturia simply lets her mask slip to become honest with herself.  

 In these lives, Arturia retains a lot of her idealism and carries out with a serious grace as a calm and collected person, yet she’s ruthlessly pragmatic sometimes. As a contrast, Solomon is more of a pessimistic and a realistic with a goofy laid-back behavior with some freaking outs, but he’s far more romantic dreamer type. In that, they differ (also because the themes of FGO and FSN are different). Nonetheless, both are incredibly selfless and noble. Solomon, when he gained human emotions and desires, still put others over him and chose to give up his newfound freedom. But the difference is huge: It was his choice as a human being. Just like Arturia did, although in his case, his final choice didn’t come without a great deal of hesitation. Yes, the crappy circumstances forced them to in a way, but they still took a choice thinking that would be the best for everyone, out of love for people (and guilt too in Roman’s case). They are proud of those painful and scary choices. Unlike Solomon’s old life where he didn’t even get this because he wasn’t an individual.  

That’s probably why their interaction in FGO, even if Arturia (and Arthur too) wasn’t aware who he was, has been nothing but respectful.
