Another day, another tiresome training session.
Same old, same old. The kings haven't waged war anywhere, and his post is the castle. He is the leader of the troops, after all. Training the soldiers was just part of his duties.
Still, the routine made his days quite gray. Wake up, don the armor, start the training, eat, check with the rangers, repeat training, take off the armor, eat and sleep. It's all so... monotonous and repetitive...
The sudden and unwelcome jingle of bells stops him in his tracks. He knows this jingle...

Charming III
Sehun, prince!AU
Chapters: (1) / (2) / (3) / (4) / (5) / (6) … masterlist
Summary: Looks can be deceiving. Oh Sehun is far from being a prince charming.
Give him a chance.
That’s what they asked me to do. And all of a sudden I understood why the King and Queen of Hondo are so prosperous - they were extremely persuasive.
In fact, they were so persuasive that after avoiding them for days about the first date with my lovely soon-to-be-husband, that they actually managed to have me sit opposite from him. It was not their forest animal-like eyes or their sweet talk that got me go agree with this awkward dinner. Oh no. It took two bodyguards in intimidating sunglasses for me to have my tail between my legs and follow them without saying anything.
Even more shockingly they also managed to get their son who hates my guts to be here. By the looks of it, and the four men surrounding our table, he probably went through the same thing as I did.
Probably, otherwise, he wouldn’t be glaring me down with his arms and legs crossed. “Uhm… yeah.” I attempted to have a conversation - failing miserably. How do you talk to a person who hates your guts? “How was your day yesterday?”
“Good.” He replied half-heartedly.
“Oh, what did you do?” I tried to show interest.
“Made out with a really hot girl I met at a club.” He did not just say that. “Then went to her place.”
Bodyguards quickly tried to calm down the murmurs around our table who caught our conversation. By his smug look, I can see he did that on purpose to piss the guards off, and probably me. That doesn’t necessarily mean he is lying.
“Okay. I know we started off on the wrong foot but I-” I tried to make it up. Whatever fight we’re in. I tried to say something so we could have peace - or at least I could have peace but he totally cuts me off.
“Stop.” His eyes are hooded and I prepare myself for whatever blow is about to come at me. “Stop the act. I don’t want your fake niceness.”
Ouch. “I’m just trying to make this whole marriage pleasant.” My words don’t affect him. His face is still stoic.
“Will it ever be?” He folds his arms and sits back.
“What?”
He rolls his eyes. “Pleasant, I mean. Will a marriage to someone you don’t consider more than something political to secure a legacy, ever be pleasant?” I swallow his words with pain. My mouth is shut. I’m trying hard not to reply to a rude comment. “Thought so.”
“You know, I never asked for a loveless relationship either. But at least I try to make it bearable instead of acting like a total prick.” I sneer at him.
He starts chuckling, which gets on my nerves. “There you are, the real you has finally shown itself.”
I sigh. Whatever I say will be useless. I grab my bag and stand up. Seems like Mr. Cool didn’t see this coming.
“Where do you think you’re going?” He asks, surprised.
“Away from you.” The guards are on my heel but I tell them I’m leaving for the restroom. I have been trying to come up with a plan to escape ever since we got to this restaurant. “Calm down. I’m going to the restroom.”
The plan is as follows. The restroom is right next to the exit. If I go to the restroom, this will take their gaze off of me for a minute or so. If I walk out of the restroom and run to the exit quick enough, I can escape these pesky guards.
One thing. If they see me escape, I’m dead.
I walk into the restroom and quickly turn to face my back close to the door. They have momentarily taken their eyes off of me and shifted it to the Prince.
This is my chance!
I’m running like an idiot for the door and freedom is almost mine as I pass the second glass door.
“Hey!” I hear one of the guards yell and point a hand in my direction. Crap.
They have seen me. I keep running… only running until I’m outside. I pass by many pedestrians as fast as I can while guards are on my heel.
I quickly run into a random vintage store and huff because I’m so out of breath. I’m running in heels which is definitely going to earn me some bruises.
When I finally am done catching my breath I see the store clerk look at me with widened eyes. “Y-y-you’re the Princess of Yangdon!” She exclaims.
“Ssshhh!” I try to shush her, panic washing over me. “Yes, I am the Princess.” I try to calm her down. The last thing I need is someone to expose my location. “And I need your help.”
A few minutes later I’m back on the street with a hat, another set of shoes and a large scarf to hide.
I am finally freed from my arrogant fiancé and the annoying guards. Freedom feels sweet. I never thought I would miss walking down the streets freely.
The last time I did this was when I was 12 years old. My mother gave my face a few alterations with make-up and I walked around without people recognizing me. Don’t think I have many memorable moments like those.
Whenever I go outside now I will need a bodyguard or someone who can protect me with me. Imagine how this will be once I get married…
I scan the area for any of the guards but fail to find any men in suit, sunglasses and wearing communication gear.
Before I know it, I bump into a large chest. I move my scarf over my mouth and look up carefully. “Sorry…”
My eyes meet with chocolate brown ones. Ones who have become rather familiar. “Fancy meeting you here, Princess.” He is standing with his hands on his hips.
“Prince Sehun…” I mutter. “Hi…”
“What were you thinking? Running away like that? Are you stupid? You don’t have a car. How were you going to get back to the palace?” His questions corner me into a corner where I feel belittled.
“I didn’t get that far with my plan,” I say, avoiding eyes.
“Oh my god, I am engaged to a nitwit.” I am ready to come back with a comment but he continues. “What you did was kind of brave.”
My eyes widen in shock. Did my ears just deceive me?
“Brave but stupid. Really fucking stupid. If I were those guards I would have just left you here for the wolves, but that would mean they’d lose their jobs.” He shakes his head.
I can’t pin him. Was he nice to me just now? “It’s not that dangerous, right?”
“God, you’re royalty.” He sighs and places a hand on my back. “You should know its dangerous. We should go back to the café. Nice try, by the way, you gave me a good laugh.”
“I did?” My eyebrows are probably connected into a unibrow, that’s how much I’m frowning.
“Yeah. You run like an imbecile in heels. Very comical.” He smiles. For the first time in my whole time in Hondo! He smiled!
I mean yes, he insulted me but he smiles! This is a revelation!
When the guards return, they give me a lecture on how I can’t escape because it’s dangerous. I tell them I’m sorry and I know, I got that lecture from my cranky fake lover too.
-
The next morning, I wake up from a terrible night sleep. I excepted to feel a little better but I didn’t. I woke up drenched in sweat and feeling so lost. My mind was alarmed, asking my body where it is because this is not home. It took me a while to realize that I am really still in another country… feeling very far away from freedom.
My feet drag me to the kitchen after making myself presentable. Haneul had already prepared a set for me to wear and I honestly don’t mind. I see both princes talking in the kitchen and I decide to join them.
“Good morning.” I greet them and they turn to me.
Instead of greeting me back, Sehun walks straight past me with a bowl filled with fruit, without saying a word. “Morning!” At least Luhan is nice to me. “Hungry?” He asks.
“Famished,” I reply, he turns around smoothly and whisks out a pan.
“Pancakes?” He proposes and I nod like a little child. He takes milk out of the fridge and I stare at him confused. I thought they had someone to prepare the breakfast. I think Luhan can read my mind when he says, “My pancakes are way better than our chef’s.”
And he was right.
“These pancakes were… amazing,” I tell him for the millionth time and he blushes.
“They’re not that great.” How humble.
“Best I’ve ever had.” I exaggerate, though it probably is true. “I didn’t expect a Prince to cook this well.”
He starts laughing. “What did you expect? Not all princes are big spenders and party animals.”
Suddenly I am reminded of my Prince. Who paraded women in a golf cart the first day I met him. I started Googling Sehun after that tragic first impression and turns out my fiancé is a big spender and a party animal.
“I wish they were more like you,” I tell Luhan jokingly but honestly and he hides his face, clearly blushing.
He looks at me like he understood what I meant by that though. “Sehun is… thick headed and difficult but not per se a bad person. When he lets you in and you get to know him, you’ll realize.” He places a hand on my shoulder and I look away. “Really. I swear.”
I nod but take his word half-heartedly. Giving up is something I usually don’t do, but how do I get closer to a man who won’t even allow me to approach him? I’m supposed to get married to Sehun. My head starts spinning. What did I expect? That an arranged marriage could ever really be a true love story? Of course, that is unlikely, but at least we can try to get along.
“Penny for your thoughts?” Luhan is grinning, and I suddenly realize I must have been in my own bubble.
I decide not to tell him the truth. “I was thinking… how awesome your pancakes are, and if I could have another one?”
His laughter fills my ears, and my unease fades away. The princes of Hondo certainly have an effect on people. While Sehun is like the night; cold, dark and distant. Luhan is more like day… compassionate, warm and bright. As for me, I’m considered to side with the moon, yet I’m somehow starting to seek comfort in the sun.
While gobbling down another pancake made by the eldest Prince, we talk. “So, what does the life of the eldest son of Hondo look like?” I ask.
“You mean, besides charity work and visiting on my country’s behalf?” He smiled cheerfully, and I nod. “Well… there is one thing…” My curiosity is piqued. “Do you want to see?”
“A secret?”
“Follow me,” he grins.
I follow Luhan upstairs and he walks into his room. I feel a little hesitant. Of course, I trust him he is the brother of my fiancé, but still going into his room doesn’t look good and gives me a bad feeling. “It’s okay if you don’t want to.” He realizes I’m uncomfortable.
“No, it is fine!” The hall is clear; I think its safe.
When I enter his room, I’m quite astonished. Next, to the large window that has a view of another tower of the castle, I see an easel with a painting on it. He didn’t strike me as an artsy type, I think he mentioned he loves soccer before. On the other end of the room, there is a huge TV with a Manchester United scarf above it and a signed shirt. Then there are the bookshelves where he displays boat models, camera’s and well, books. “This way.” He motions for me to follow him.
He opens another room, and I see a scarlet red color coming from the room. My forehead creases and he laughs. “It’s not something satanic or something.”
I enter the room, and he was right. It’s not. It’s a darkroom, filled with pictures hanging on wash lines, and machinery I have never seen before. Who would have thought that he’d be so into something like this?
“Wow,” I say as I walk closer to one of the pictures. It’s a picture of a girl. She is smiling endearingly while tucking a strand of her dark hair behind her ear. Her appearance is alluring and I’m struck by a pang of… I can’t pin it. Nonetheless, she looks wonderful and I wonder if Luhan took this picture. “This is amazing.”
His smile is blinding, clearly proud. “Right? This is my little treasure – my blood, sweat, and tears if you will.” He moves a little closer, and I look up. “If you are ever interested, tell me.”
“Thank you, for sharing.”
The rest of the day goes by smoothly, probably because I haven’t seen my sort-of-fiancé yet. Currently, I’m lying on my bed, I think dinner is in two hours so I decided to make a call back home to see how they hold up without me. “Hello, darling?” My mother’s voice booms through my phone, and I mentally slap myself for calling her when I hear all the noise in the back. I forgot she was throwing a party for the duke and duchess of Ledshire, old allies, and friends of my father.
“Hi, mother.” Its good to hear her voice again. “Am I calling at a bad time?”
“Oh. Nonsense! You’re my daughter. How are you doing over there?” She asks.
My face falls, what am I supposed to tell her? Should I tell her the truth and disappoint her? Or should I lie?
“Are you okay, darling?” She asks again.
“Yes! All is fine. I think the Prince is warming up to me.” I lie. If I could, I would beg her to take me back home but I have only been here for two days. I can’t give up without having fought a real battle.
“Ah! I knew it! My daughter is so clever.” I know she is happy to hear it. My mind starts overthinking. What will happen if she finds out I hate it here? I hear some more noise in the background. “Sorry, sweetie. I have to hang up, I’ll call you back later, alright?”
“Sure,” I shake my head, even though she can’t see it.
“Kisses. Text your little brother, too, okay?” We hang up, and there is a knock on my door.
“Yes?”
The door opens, and I see Haneul the maid appearing from behind the door. “Haneul, what a pleasure.” She is holding a tray of biscuits and tea.
“Hello, your Highness.” She bows and walks towards my bed. Then places the tray down. “I have for you; English tea, with traditional Hondo cookies.” They look delicious. While she pours my tea in, I stare at the cookies. They are thin, with a pattern on them, and I detect some red sprinkles in them, which is probably strawberry; I can smell it. “So, how are you and Prince Sehun doing?” She asks out of the blue.
I’m a little taken aback by this question, but I figure this is just how curious maids are usually. “Working on our relationship.” I smile. Technically, I’m not really lying. There is a lot of tension between us but I’m working on it. Sehun? Not so much.
“Oh?” She blinks at me. “That sounds good. I heard you went on a first date yesterday?”
“Ehm, yes.” I’m starting to feel a little uncomfortable. I guess this is all on me. She has been with the Royal family of Hondo for years. Of course, she would be curious about who the prince is marrying. It’s probably because I can’t say it’s going well, that I feel so self-conscious. “I was very nervous. It went better than expected.” Again, not lying. It went better than expected because my plan worked.
“Okay.” She smiles and leaves quickly.
That was odd. I don’t think much of it though, Haneul is high on my list of nice people in here. If I were a maid, I would be curious too.
After finishing the tea and cookies, I decided to familiarize myself more with the castle. If I’m going to be here for a long time, I better get used to it because god knows I get lost easily in big castles. I find my way outside see that the sun is almost setting, this is a sight I don’t want to miss.
Unfortunately, it seems that I am not the only person who wanted to come outside for a while. My fiancé is sitting on the hammock couch close to the garden, glasses sitting on his nose as he is holding a book. He looks like a dream but knowing him he, not a prince charming.
The moment I detect him, I tiptoe back. Hoping he doesn’t know I’m here.
“I don’t like sneaky people.” He huffs.
I stop in my tracks. Crap.
“I wasn’t doing any of that sort.” I defend myself.
He rolls his eyes. “Sure, you weren’t. It’s not like you were walking on your toes while staring at me.” He makes me sound like a total creep.
“I was avoiding you.” I retort. Crap. He is coming this way.
“By going outside, where I am?” He pushes his glasses up his nose, when he is standing in front of me, and crosses his arms.
I want to sigh. He is persistent. “Couldn’t you just let me off, and pretend you did not notice me. Instead of arguing with me?”
He laughs, how rare. “What would be the fun of that, Princess?” I blink, a little taken aback, and unsure of what to answer. “Go back inside.”
“I think I’ll decide myself what I do,” I say, and it feels great. I get a rush by going against him.
Sehun heaves his shoulders up and walks past me. “Suit yourself, but I’m getting dinner.”
My eyes widen, I grab my phone to see the time. All the rush I just fades like snow in the sun. Totally forgot, they’re serving dinner now. I go back inside and find my way to the dining room. Unfortunately, experiences some wrong turns. Everyone is already seated, except for me.
“My apologies, I got lost on the way.” The castle has too many rooms. I bet that’s what they would say too if they would live in our castle in Yangdon.
“All is fine,” the King motions for me to sit. I take a seat in the only empty seat, which is sadly next to Sehun, but across from Luhan, who smiles at me while Sehun smirks at my little blunder. God, he really finds happiness in my misery.
Dinner is tense. Although, I can talk to the King, the Queen, and Prince Luhan quite comfortably. There is this constant dark aura sitting next to me. At everything, I say he either scoffs of makes another sound to get on my nerves. Luhan gives me an apologetic smile and I shake my head, to assure him I’m fine.
“Sehun, (Y/N), how was your date yesterday?” The Queen asks.
My head turns to Sehun, curious to what he is going to say. He notices everyone’s eyes on him and he puts his spoon down. “Fine.” His facial expression says everything but fine, and it hurts. I never had anyone hate me so passionately. He doesn’t even know me, nor is he interested in giving me a chance.
“Great. We want you two to go on another date.” The King folds his hands, about to say something he wants everyone’s ear for. “Hopefully you two will get close because we want to announce the engagement next week.”
So soon?
We have been on one unsuccessful date, and they already want to make this an official thing?
My head turns to Sehun as he slides his chair from the table, removes the napkin from his lap and throws it at the table. Then leaves.
I take a deep breath to stay calm. He acts like it’s only him who doesn’t like this news. I’m holding back my tears by biting on the inside of my cheek. The King and Queen seem shocked by Sehun’s scene and the Queen excuses herself from the table, shortly after the King leaves too. Leaving me behind, with Luhan, who is staring at me like a wounded animal.
If my life is going to be like this for the rest of it, then I’m not that this is what I want.
A/N: I can’t find the previous Sehun GIF… anyway, hope you guys liked it, this was more of a build up :)
