     his heart was racing fiercely, the kind of rhythm that made the hard ground he stood on feel soft and his knees weak, all while his head spun. one hand was pressed firmly to his shoulder in some attempt to slow the bleeding that marked a trail of crimson in the light snow. with every step it seemed the pressure from his hand was wavering, that his head felt lighter and spun faster, and the straight line in which he walked swayed even more. he was alone. for the first time in a long time the young wolf heard no sound other than his laboured breathing and the winter wind. alone and apparently bleeding to death.where exactly he was when he finally fell to the ground was lost to him. whether he was minutes or miles from anyone was a question he didn’t dare ask.

       after everything how could this be the end? he had faced much more trying battles, more worthy opponents, stronger blades, and still -it seemed- he was anything but invincible as the blackness encroaching on his vision came to prove. and perhaps it was the end he thought, though it drifted through his mind unanchored by time and distorted by an oxygen starved brain. perhaps the end of his song was here and now, with no conclusion or closure. it was then, at the end of that thought and as the darkness had him falling backward that he thought that -just maybe- he saw the figure of a person.

   The news that his wife was once again with child was music to Dontin’s ears. He thanked the gods for another blessing and hoped that this child would be a girl, a little lady for him to dote on and for Eddara to spoil as well. Her belly had only started to swell slightly when she fell sick and Dontin had spared no expense to get both her and his unborn child healthy once more. It was all for nothing. The news that his wife had passed due to fever had come early in the morning and Dontin was left to mourn for his wife and child.  In the sept, it was cold and dark but Dontin had to make the ride to High Garden. Even though his wife was not of his faith, he had no idea how to pray to the old gods but still, he had to pray to someone for her and his child.  Despite the morning being early, Dontin had heard the footsteps approaching behind him but still he did not move from his prayer. He waited instead for the person to approach him.

A more emotional man might have cried out. A less emotional man might have stayed on the hill.

Dorian was none of these things. He saw the arrow cut above the rows of soldiers in the front, and from his elevated vantage point he saw it hit a target that it wasn't allowed to hit. Couldn't hit. Shouldn't hit.

Victory was very near, he should stay where he was, with his flags, with his generals, where he could overlook the battle and control the flow of it. Instead, he dug his spurs into his horse's side, and despite the shouts of his men, threw himself into the thick of it.

Chaos. The clang of swords, axes. It was a dry, hot day and the dust of the red earth kicked up into his face. It didn't matter. He cut down one, two, three people barely registering more than their livery. Then he was before his injured comrade, Vardar in hand - when had the great long sword gotten there? He didn't remember pulling it from its scabbard - and thrusting a hand down. Trying to help them get up on the mare.

Someone in the dirt of enemies screamed: "THE FORGE! THE FORGE!" and he had a feeling the next volley of arrows would be aimed at him.
