Where did you get 'leniarchy' from, as a term for 'beta-lead society'? I tried to look up 'len/leni' as a Latin or Greek root, and didn't immediately find anything. Is it related to 'lingender' as an androgynous gender descriptor? Or something else?

I waited SO long for someone to ask this, hahaha. "Lingender" is actually a new word to me, never heard that one before!

I did derive "leniarchy" from a Latin root and it was also intended to be unrelated to gender, though, you're correct on both of those. I took it from lēniō, which means something like "to soften/soothe" or "to mollify/assuage/appease/pacify".

Kieron, for the 'Brutally Honest Ships' meme, are there ANY Batkid ships you find interesting? (Like, ships with at least one Batkid in them.) Not necessarily ones you ship, just ones that have something compelling going on.

okay so dick is the most shippable bat imo. he actually really wants to be in a romantic relationship, in a way no one else in the family does. i'm not often interested in what is actually done with him, but i'm genuinely compelled by the potential in several of his dynamics.

starfire's role in his establishing his adult identity was so key i genuinely feel he would not be the same person without her. that was a formative relationship. the fact that she isn't really allowed to be around him if they aren't together and writers don't bring her up in books she's not in is a damn shame.

their relationship was so aggressively 1980s, which means on the one hand it was deliberately as hip and modern as the writers could manage at the time and on the other hand it became agonizingly dated right away. there are so many bits that were supposed to be heartwarming and meaningful, or interestingly complex, that from a modern perspective are just 'wow dick that's so racist' or 'no stop that's domestic abuse stop valorizing it' or whatever.

i also like to theorize about him with jericho. specifically if i cared enough about this kind of thing i could write a fic where the aftermath of dick leaving kori for getting married fell out differently, and he had a super ill-advised rebound fling with the only other friend who'd come with them to Tamaran.

i think joey is the only close male friend dick's ever had that he wasn't in the habit of locking horns with, and they became fast friends really quickly, and dick outright said that joey's romance style appeals to him and if he was a girl he'd fall for him too.

however joe had gotten his heart broken and was deliberately only having intense short-term affairs at that point, which simply isn't how dick is wired, so if they did have a rebound Thing it would be so awkward. which is my definition of an interesting ship ig. there's so much unexplored meat in that relationship that ill-advised romantic attachment could really spill out.

dick with roy mildly intrigues me but it doesn't actually have much narrative potential, i just think it would be funny.

but uh. no one who's currently actively in his life, really. he can be with barbara, that's fine. i don't love it. not interesting at all.

3. What was the last thing you looked up for a fic?

I think the last thing I looked up was for A Bark Worse than His Bite, and it was 'busy times in strip clubs'. XD I needed to make sure I wasn't radically off about my perceptions of when they operate, given that I have never actually been to one.

Yes, we are going to a strip club.

21. What is something that no one has caught about one of your fics?

Hehehehe. There's a twist/piece of Feel it in My Bones that no one has noticed yet and I am so excited to get to reveal it to everyone in the next/last chapter. I've lined up all my clues and foreshadowing, it's totally guessable (in my admittedly biased opinion), but it hasn't quite clicked for anyone. At least, not that they've told me.

Very excited for the WHAT reactions I am sure to get.

Reverse Unpopular Opinion: Papers written just after linguistics started getting codified, where we get to read words like 'cerebral consonants' and 'shibbilants'.

Haha, I’ve never actually read any of these… they remind me of reading early 1900s archaeology papers when people barely knew anything about anything yet and made up artifact classifications and phase delineations that we have torturously had to work with and retrofit for the next hundred years.

However, there’s a lot of charm in seeing these early theories and early classifications while we were trying to work out the fundamental building blocks of what would become our field of study. I also recently picked up a book compiling a bunch of Scientific American articles about plate tectonics from the 1960s, when it was still new and revolutionizing everything. It’s humbling, to see people grappling with something you learned as a-matter-of-course when it was brand new and they were trying to figure out how to understand and classify and explain it. Like no, the Salado people were’t an immigrant group from the Tonto basin who pushed out the black-on-white pottery-makers and built platform mounds in their place; that’s obvious now. You were seeing something real for the first time, though. I imagine whatever the heck “cerebral consonants” are mark similar attempts to establish categories, classifications, and theories, and even if they’re a headache to read between the lines to extract useful information out of, it’s cool from a History of Science perspective.

Also there’s a joke here about shibbilants and shibboleths that I can’t quite make coalesce.
