Notes: This got way longer than I thought it would.

“I’m calling it a night.” Maria decided, letting out a long sigh.
“You’re right.” Merlin decided, taking off his glasses and rubbing his eyes.
“What was that?” Maria asked. “Did you just say…”
“Don’t get used to it.” Merlin cut quickly, but a grin pulling at his lips. “It won’t happen again.”
She snorted. “I’ll keep that in mind.” She got up.
Merlin also stood up. “We did a good job today.”
“And now you’re complimenting me. Are you sure you’re feeling fine?”
He gave her a look. “You know you work well, Maria. You don’t need me to point it out for you.”
She gave him an odd look. “You’re very strange tonight.”
“More than usual?” He teased.
“Definitely.”
Merlin sighed. “It’s the hour. Nothing good ever happens after midnight.”
Maria scoffed. “That’s what they say; but what’s the worst…”
He put a finger to her lips. “Don’t even say it. You don’t want to jinx it.”
Maria froze under the touch, her eyes -so blue, so intense -open wide in her shock at the touch. And Merlin could blame a lot of things for what happened next -their tiredness, the late hour, a lapse in judgement -but he’d know -deep down -that he did it because he wanted to.
He caressed her lips with the pad of his finger, his eyes looking into hers; his intention so clear that it would be easy as hell for her to say no -or even punch him for presuming.
But Maria didn’t move -it actually looked like she was having a hard time breathing -she just watched him back, waiting in tense anticipation.
She didn’t wait long; Merlin tipped her chin back and kissed her. This time for real.
