"And anyway, you have to do what you need to do to keep yourself running well. It's not as if stopping yourself from being happy will make any of this any better."
"No," Kit said after a moment. "It's just that... I don't know." He laughed helplessly. "I get guilty."
Djam made a noise exactly like a horse snorting, so that Kit had to keep himself from laughing at that, anyway. "Guilt! Guilt's what the Abnegate uses to keep us from doing our work, my advice-master says. After the fact, when it comes as fear we've done something wrong; or before the fact, to make us afraid we're about to do something wrong. The food metaphor— When you're working, why would you starve yourself of what will keep you doing your work well? That makes no sense. We've come a long way to do this, so let's do it right. If taking some time off from the distress helps us do our work better, so be it. Yes?"

They swam away through the darkening water. S'reee set the pace; it was a quick one. “Why did we have to leave in such a hurry?” Kit said.
“There aren't many wizardries more powerful than a Calling,” S'reee said as she led them away. “He'll weave those whales' names into his spell, and if they agree to be part of the Song, the wizardry will lead them to the place appointed, at the proper time.”
“Just by singing their names?”
“K!t, that's plenty. Don't you pay attention when someone calls you by your name? Your name is part of you. There's power in it, tied up with the way you secretly think of yourself, the truth of the way you are. Know what a person's name means to him, know who he feels he is – and you have power over him. That's what Aroooon is using.”
That was a bit of information that started Nita's thoughts going in nervous circles. How do I think of myself? And does this mean that the people who know what I think can control me? I'm not sure I like this...

brought to you by the q train because i guess that's where all my writing gets done.
“Look, I’m not saying you can’t handle it.” The guy had his hands up, placating, and so many furious responses rose up in Eliot at once that for a terrible moment he couldn’t speak at all. This guy was short enough - Quentin sized, which he wasn’t fucking thinking about - that Eliot could at least look down his nose at him, which he thoroughly deserved. “I’m just saying, in this case, with multiverses involved, I think she’s better equipped - “
“Better equipped - “ there was his voice back, thankfully, although he wasn’t thrilled with the way it had risen. Off to the side, the skinny redhead who’d been pretending not to pay attention snorted loudly, and Eliot gritted his teeth.
“Magicians take years of formal education,” he ground out. “Wizards get a handbook. I have a master’s degree.”
“We’re outta time, Kit,” said the girl, and Eliot felt power rise off the - what? some circle around her, something she’d drawn while he thought she’d been idly dragging a toe through the dust. His hands rose automatically even though he could tell - it was so much power - and then she was gone, and there was just this damn guy, with a wry smile on his face and - seriously? A hand laid sympathetically on Eliot’s arm.
“Magicians get a master’s degree,” Kit said quietly. “Wizards take an oath.”
He squeezed Eliot’s forearm, and Eliot, clearly still dazed from the flash of power, didn’t even jerk away.
“If Quentin lives, somewhere, he can be found,” Kit continued. “And if he can be found, Dairine will find him.”
Eliot’s eyes were wet. Fuck that girl and the dust she’d kicked up, leaving. “I can’t believe Margo puts up with this shit,” he muttered.
Kit laughed. “She doesn’t, really,” he said, and it might be placating again, ugh, but Eliot would take it. “She’s a friend of my sister’s. Her scariest friend, and that’s saying something.”
“I should hope so,” Eliot sighed, and let himself be led away to wait.
ON A ROLL. Also, Kit Solo came verrrrryyyyyy easy. Tomorrow I will attempt Nita Organa. I tried Kylo Roshaun and he came out ok but...needs work.
a headcanon that might become a ficlet:
Kit Rodriguez is autistic. He is very, very neurotypical-passing, partly because he was bullied all through elementary school and had to learn how to be more macho/less of a target.
The reason he starts acting “more autistic” in A Wizard Alone is not because Daryl’s autism is contagious; it’s because being inside Daryl’s head reopens all the doorways he locked when he was a kid. Being around other autistic people means you start acting more autistic, because you feel safe around them and pick up their mannerisms; being around other autistic people in such a close way means that even more rubs off.
The Powers chose Kit to help Daryl through his Ordeal was that it would help Kit, too. You know what they say- There are no accidents.
