As a documentary photographer, I occasionally get a chance to abruptly peep into strangers’ lives. Through the years, I have met remarkable humans with all sorts of stories, ranging from heartbreaking to inspirational ones. Today being World International Women’s day, I still have this fresh image of 69 year-old Ayo Narasista. We met about 3 weeks ago in Nyapeya (Kitgum) while on assignment for International Committee of the Red Cross. To many of us, Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) are another story that we hear of. For her, it’s a story that impacted on her life. Her son, who was her hope for continuing the family name was abducted by armed men on his way from school in 2002. He was 13 years old then. “I had 7 children so after Alex was abducted, I was left with 6. The whole community seemed to have turned on me like I had failed to protect my son. My husband also left me after this incident. I felt like a failure. So isolated and depressed. I had a daughter but she also died, leaving me with 6 grand children to raise.” In a few incidences during this conversation, Ayo seemed heartbroken but full of positivity and energy most of the time. I couldn’t help think about myself being in her shoes. She was way stronger than I could ever imagine. It could be a time-healing factor, but maybe it was not. She seemed Strong. I stared at her for few, my eyes met her gaze, time seemed to have stopped. Her strong eyes pierced mine, and I can swear at this moment I sensed the real her. The one without the anguishes, without the suffrage. I saw a Woman. Cheers to the existence of this great creature of the Universe! #womenempowerment #womenshistorymonth #womenrock #women #grandma #kony2012 #lra #uganda #kitgum #kampala #war #abduction #igs #portrait #portrait_mood #portrait_perfection . . .
Never Surrender On What You Truly Want. Find a way, not an excuse. Find a reason to do it, not to give up on it. Create a path where there is none, because you will only regret it otherwise! There is always a reason not to do it and always a way to fail, but there is also always a way to succeed and a reason to do it. This was the place, where the magic of #LindyHop and #Swingdance started from and am happy to be back to give it out to more dancers, who are willing to take it like the way I did it. From all other districts that I went through only #Kitgum district as tried the best to engage girls into the dance and am so happy for the improvement that. I love it the way each of them was feeling the music and dance even though it's their first time to give it a try. I believe with time, we shall more dancers from Kitgum who are like me to travel the world as they share with others. #blacklindyhoppersfund #blhfoundation #lindyhopperslife #LindyHop #lindyhopper #lindyhopping #lindyfocus #heartofdanceafricarhythm #herrangdancecamp #pacificswingdancefoundation #frannkiemanning #SoloJazz #solojazzdance #solocharleston #solojazzmoves #1920sjazz #1930sjazz #yoga #acroyoga #instructorokurutgeorge #Ugandaswingkids #SwingDanceUganda (at Kitgum Youth Centre) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl8IEe1raGo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
We are so happy to see the turn up of dancers in a big number to attend #lindyhop and #swingdance workshops at Gulu youth center. As today is our last day in Gulu. We are calling all dancers to come in much time and also invite more girls to take part on today's class as we are going to focus more on #lindyhop which requires us to dance with partners. As you had requested me as Okurut George to talk more about dance opportunities and what is needed as a dancer to be having, cause many have been dancing but they don't see any progress in their dancing. Let's keep time and we share more on that angle because we learn from each other always. #Kitgum District will be our next stop so if you are there just get ready for us. @blacklindyhf @bluemarbleday @frankiemanningfoundation @pacificswingdance @camphollywood @littlebigswingcamp @lia_mar_7 @bad_ass_jazz_festival @herrangdancecamp @savoycup_official @anduze_jazz #gulu #peacedanceproject #SwingDanceUganda #Ugandaswingkids #lindyhop #lindyhopper #lindyhoplife #1920sjazz #1930sjazz #swingout #solojazzpower #SoloJazz #swingdancing #swingdancer #swingdancefestival #swingdance #laswingers #blacklindyhoppersfund #frannkiemanning (at Gulu, Uganda) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClxpKkKIED-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Meditation Changes Brain in Good Ways Monks who practiced Buddhist meditation had evidence of significantly greater brain activity, called gamma wave activity, in areas associated with learning and happiness compared with those who didn't practice meditation, according to a recent study. Gamma waves involve mental processes including attention, memory, learning, and conscious perception. The monks also showed higher activity in areas associated with positive emotions, like happiness. "There's no doubt from the standpoint of research and my own clinical experience that meditation can reduce both the experience of pain and help people manage stress resulting from having pain," Chapman tells WebMD. Meditation is a therapy offered in all comprehensive pain centers, he says. How do you know if meditation is "working" - if your body is actually getting that relaxation response? If you get feelings of warmth, heaviness, and calm when you meditate, it mean that you've gone deep enough, says Chapman. It you just can't reach that level, enroll in a class, he suggests. "Sometimes it helps to have someone guide you, to help you know when you're making progress." If meditation just doesn't seem to work, move on to another relaxation method, Benson advises. "Any practice that can evoke the relaxation response is of benefit, be it meditation, yoga, breathing, or repetitive prayer. There is no reason to believe that one is better than the other. The key is repetition, but the repetition can be a word, sound, mantra, prayer, breathing, or movement." Today I decided to share out this article, Written by Jeanie Lerche Davis. Much greetings to @bluemarbleday For each day sharing with the team in kitgum and you guys was had to start your day with #meditation which makes the day more great and fresh. #meditation #yogatribe #communityyoga #yogalife #kitgum #yogafordiabetes #yogateacher #yogastrength #yogabeginners #bluemarble #inspire #Okurutgeorge (at Kitgum Airport) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6iY1oGhdoj/?igshid=aq0wfn73l6pg

Residents of Gulu, Pader, Acholibur, Olwiyo and Kitgum have lived for years without a convenient access road and connection to other areas, including but not limited to markets and health centres but that will now be a story of the past.
There is a breeze of hope that has swept the Acholi region with the completion of the 100KM stretch of the Gulu-Kitgum highway.

(Multiple shots) Between January and March is sort of a resting period for me. For some reason, assignments come in slow. Yesterday, I was looking back at some of the most satisfying projects I did last year and #AgDevCo ‘s assignment in Gulu surely has a priority placement on the list. (Check images shared on 7th August 2018) AgDevCo is contributing to the transformation of agriculture in Gulu from subsistence farming to a modern commercial way. This is through investing debt and equity plus hands-on support to establish and develop commercial scale agri business. AgDevCo’s small holder development unit works with rural agricultural establishments to develop equitable out-grower schemes that boost productivity and incomes for small holder farmers. In this particular case study, the AgDevCo wanted to tell the story that of a cotton processing and trading company (Gulu Agricultural Development Company) in Northern Uganda through the eyes of the farmers it supports and the people it employs. Besides documenting the whole project, I was also required to take individual portraits of 10 farmer whose story stood out. Looking through the archives, I thought... “Why not share these Portraits Specifically?” . . . . . . . . . . . .
