#JackedKirby - Judge, Draaga and EXECUTIONER!!! The Demon offers up some of Jack’s most ambitious supernatural work, especially from a writing standpoint. Sure he is drawing a main character that is a demonic monster... but the reason I say his storytelling here is ambitious is because of his choices to take chances with the storyline and really work some interesting angles instead of the typical horror tropes usually explored in comics. #Issue7 of The Demon, published in March of 1973, is a great example of this... the book opens with not one but TWO splash pages, with the second one being a two page horizontal splash (my personal favorite from Jack)!!! That’s a lot of real estate for Jack to work his magic, which he does masterfully. The main subject of the two pages is a spooky looking Puritan/Pilgrim looking individual know as The Judge and his mini dragon like familiar named Draaga (only Jack could get away with naming a miniature dragon character Draaga). The Judge with his desk clothes and long white hair strikes an imposing image... and Draaga looks scary as well as cute a cuddly all at the same time! The second page sees Draaga go from cuddly to dangerous as The Judge flings him into an attack on the Etrigan. Jack does a beautiful job illustrating Etrigan falling backward while catching the incoming Draaga by the claws, showing off perfect symmetry from both the attacker and the attacked. The double splash also features a beautiful nightscape background, filled with dark and ominous clouds against the blue moonlight. And this is all in the first TWO PAGES OF THE BOOK! The funny thing is this isn’t even the most important stuff in this issue. Just a few pages later we are introduced to one of Jack’s coolest later in his career character creations, Klarion the Witch Boy!
