A Nobler Religion

“Whatever we cannot know let us simply and truthfully agree not to know, but no one must be expected to take for granted what reason refuses to admit. There’s a heaviness of heart that turns to lightness when I tell them how we feel. I don’t share Olga’s wisdom by name; that part’s entirely mine, used only to shore up the rest. But still, it’s there – inside me:

“Love, like strength and courage, is a strange thing: the more we give the more we find we have to give.”

It’s important to me that they know they’re loved, not by me per se – they already know that – but collectively by us. It’s important that they know that the worst can happen and we’ll still be here, holding the threads together, knowing what to do when lesser versions of this life would have them bound by optics and the terrible misapprehension that conformity’s somehow the object. It’s important they aim for balance. It’s important they know the truth. Unbiased. Uncensored.

Because they have the right to make informed choices that keep them safe and healthy; because it’s our responsibility to equip them with the critical means to do so. Because they are not lost; they are bright and young and vital. Because they can be our better selves, and I believe – in the vast wealth of their idiosyncratic charms – that in all the ways, they may be exceptional.

And above all, I want them to believe the same. Always. As a matter of course. No matter what.
