Do you feel like it was strange for Ymir to giver herself up to Reiner and Bertolt, knowing that she would be punished for her actions (which weren't /really/ her own), after she had made all those claims about living for yourself? (This has been bugging me since Saturday but I'm toooo nervous to say anything)
yeah but ymir’s whole claim that she will only live for herself is repeatedly contradicted by her actions, which always seem to be helping, protecting and giving herself up for the sake of others. you can argue that she IS still living for herself because she wants to help historia and the others; it benefits her to do that (at least emotionally) because she loves historia and has formed relationships with the 104th.
and she may have had self-interested motives in getting to know historia but ultimately ends up loving and saving that girl in multitudes of ways. she saves erwin, she saves the 104th, she saves historia, she even saves bertholdt and reiner by giving herself up to them so they aren’t punished for coming home empty handed.
what really gets to me about ymir is she’s just a freckled moron who brags about being a selfish punk rocker who doesn’t give a goddamn fuck, all the while protecting her friends and repeatedly sacrificing her own desires to help others. she’s a soft-hearted goober who thinks she’s more hardcore than she actually is.
