K-47 Call to Arms Assignment #3 - Battle Report

I was initially hesitant to add another miniatures game to my collection, but I’m very glad I did. The pseudo-historical setting of Bolt Action never quite appealed to me, yet the addition of undead soldiers, mutations, and rift-energy-powered weaponry pulled me right in. The idea of fielding 1,000 points of Axis forces with only a single visible human feels wonderfully strange and cinematic.

The battle featured here comes from my second game of Konflikt ’47, played against Black Knight’s own Old Git, Craig (I can call him that—I’m no youngster myself). It was a fierce Axis-on-Axis clash, but our 1,000-point forces couldn’t have been more different. I invested heavily in the Schreckwulfen, which have quickly become my favourite unit. I’m using the previous edition’s metal sculpts; while I’m sure Warlord Games will eventually produce excellent plastic versions, there’s something deeply satisfying about the heft of solid metal miniatures—especially for a unit as brutal and imposing as the Schreckwulfen.

Craig’s army included a unit of Totenkorps, which he deployed just beyond my line as a tar pit to slow me down. Wanting to test the close-combat mechanics, I sent the Schreckwulfen charging straight in. I wasn’t sure if it was a wise tactical choice, given my limited familiarity with the units’ stats and abilities, but it felt fitting—what else are crazed lycanthropes for if not tearing into the enemy? They made quick work of the Totenkorps and cemented their place as my favourite squad.

From there, they pushed into the forest, where they enjoyed a streak of good fortune against a unit of Stahltruppen. On the opposite flank, my Panzerlaufer’s gravity pulse weapon wreaked havoc on enemy walkers and vehicles, making for a visually spectacular firefight.

One of the mechanics that makes Konflikt ’47 shine for me is the pin marker system. That observation won’t surprise long-time Bolt Action players, but I find it adds real tension and depth to decision-making. In many other games, soldiers will fight to the death without hesitation; in K-47, pin markers elegantly model the psychological strain of battle. Even hardened troops can falter, and deciding whether to activate a pinned unit always feels like a meaningful gamble.

I also appreciate the rule for pre-measuring. K-47 allows it, but only after an order has been declared. This strikes a smart balance: modern rulesets that permit unrestricted pre-measuring remove ambiguity, but can slow play if players constantly measure every possibility. By requiring a committed order first, K-47 preserves both fairness and momentum.

In the end, the Schreckwulfen were indisputably the stars of the match. They’ve earned a permanent place in my lists, and I’m already looking forward to fielding them again—especially in the upcoming tournament on November 29.

The 9th Savlar deployed tonight into an unwinnable battle: eight Imperial Guard holding, COD Zombies style, against wave upon wave of increasingly difficult and increasingly bizarrely armed enemies. A wargame, made to improve our cohesion in a context where no one could ruin someone else's evening. What we got instead was a miracle. Through a bug in the ever-stable ARMA III, one of our newer recruits ended up being entirely invulnerable. As one after another guardsman fell, and our respawn tickets ticked down to zero, we each were treated to the sight of Convict Wall-rat battling his own private war. With lasgun in one hand, and a looted plasma pistol in the other, this hero of the Imperium took every shot that came his way, and kept fighting for a full half hour after all of his fellows had fallen.
