A great plant combination for an autumn display with the feathery inflorescences of Calamagrostis brachytricha (Korean feather reed grass) and a Miscanthus sinensis cultivar (Chinese silver grass, eulalia) contrasting with the pink-purple flowers of the tall, slender-stemmed short-lived perennial Verbena bonariensis (purpletop vervain). This border was in the Hylands Park One World Garden, Chelmsford, Essex, which was the perfect place for a walk on a sunny October day.

A heavy autumn dew and some early morning sunlight add some sparkle to the fluffy plumes of Calamagrostis brachytricha (Korean feather reed grass). This clump forming grass has green leaves that turn yellow in the autumn and the flowers, produced in late summer, will persist into the winter.

Still looking great in winter the fluffy inflorescences of Calamagrostis brachytricha (Korean feather reed grass). This clump-forming, upright grass will thrive in sun and partial shade.The gently arching grey-green foliage takes on yellow shades in autumn. Two of the keys to using grasses in design is to find those that survive the winter weather by remaining upright, so retaining their display, as well as remaining in clumps rather than being invasive.

The Chelsea Grasslands of the High Line, New York, provided a wonderful display of the plumes of Calamagrostis brachytricha (Korean feather reed grass). These inflorescences will continue into the winter. This species is tolerant of a range of conditions but thrives best in a moisture retentive but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade.
