I made a chart of all 99 campaigns on Makestar that have officially closed as of 180419. I then removed the following as they were unrelated to KPop/music: "Movie ‘Sul,Sa,Rang’ Production Funding Project”, “Musical HANEUL A making”, “JUST JERK Party Project“, “Master: God of Noodles - Stack the Noodle Bowls Project“, and “Park Hae Jin Bangkok Fan Meeting Project“. After that, I removed the following for being “all or nothing” campaigns that did not reach 100%: “Song WonSub Album Project“ and “J2M Single Album making“. Lastly, I removed the following for being “merchandise” projects which I felt were more like order forms rather than funding campaigns (hope that makes sense): “XIA JUNSU X DESIGNER JOO YOUNG LEE“, “2PM Limited edition phonecase“, and “A-PINK Limited edition phonecase“. This left me with 89 campaigns - there were some others I thought about removing, but in the end, I kept it to “music” rather than strictly “KPop”.
Of those 89 campaigns, 77 were for albums, 7 were for photobooks, 3 were for fan meetings, 1 was for a music video, and 1 was for a show.
Over all data:
The campaign asking the most was “B.A.P Limited Album Project“ at $32,199. The campaign asking the least was “Blady Giru Single Album Production Project“ at $2,496. The average asking cost was $9,386.
The campaign that raised the most was “B.A.P Photobook Project“ at $235,682.38. The campaign that raised the least was “David Oh, single album making“ at $1,358.66. The average amount raised was $30.275.57.
The campaign that earned the highest percentage over asking was “The Rose Mini Album Project“ at 1305.09%. The campaign that earned the least percentage over asking was “David Oh, single album making“ at 8.03%. the average percentage over asking was 306.72%.
The campaign with the most donators was “B.A.P Photobook Project“ with 2800. The campaign with the least donators was “Debut Project of the ‘Road Boyz’“ with 39. The average number of donators was 335.
The groups with the most campaigns were BerryGood, Stellar, and Top Secret; each had 3.
More detailed data after the cut! (Warning: long and data heavy - obviously - but it is in sections.)
6. Nine Muses the Color of 8 Photobook, Charity Project - $30,729
7. ASTRO Very First Photobook Project - $29,533
8. WE·GIRLS Debut Album Project - $26,774
9. 2017 April Photo Calendar Project - $21,246
10. SNUPER Debut 2nd Anniversary Photobook Album Project - $17,671
BAP and WE·GIRLS’ albums were BY FAR the most expensive album campaigns, as you can see in how they rank against the usually MUCH more expensive photobook campaigns. I think it’s expected for BAP to ask for a lot though, which means WE·GIRLS is really the odd one out.
4. ASTRO Very First Photobook Project - $101,365.46
5. A 'Fanspecial' Stellar's Album Project - $94,235.01
6. SNUPER Debut 2nd Anniversary Photobook Album Project - $93,064.17
7. The Rose Mini Album Project - $85,180.44
8. Nine Muses the Color of 8 Photobook, Charity Project - $80,297.08
9. LABOUM Album Project - $75,751.58
10. APRIL Special Photobook Project - $67,240.31
Honestly, is anyone at all surprised that BAP and EXID are at the top of this list? ...yeah, didn’t think so. And, from a purely biased standpoint: Stellar~ Twinkles~ so proud 😊
Overall campaigns with the highest percentage over asking:
1. The Rose Mini Album Project - 1305.09%
2. A 'Fanspecial' Stellar's Album Project - 1132.42%
3. 14U NEW Album Project - 976.82%
4. A.C.E Special Album Project - 907.21%
5. LABOUM Album Project - 849.93%
6. B.A.P Photobook Project - 752.97%
7. The Rose Single Album Project - 618.86%
8. Crayon Pop Winter Party Project - 605.17%
9. SONAMOO Album Project - 592.6%
10. SONAMOO Album Project Part 2 - 592.05%
While earning the most is the obvious choice as far as “most successful” goes, this category is also extremely important to fans who use the site for two different reason. The first is that it demonstrates, not just how much more fans were able to raise over what was being asked of them (thus offering a great sense of accomplishment), but also that how well something does and how supportive a fandom is is not wholly dependent on how rich or how much bigger (and thus having more fans who are willing to donate) a fandom happens to be. The second reason it’s important is because groups will often add more rewards to their campaigns as the percentage goes up.
For almost exactly a year, Stellar held the top spot, but The Rose’s campaign ended on 180402 and now they’re #1. From a Twinkle to all The Rose fans: kudos! 😊
5. Nine Muses the Color of 8 Photobook, Charity Project - 1209
6. The Rose Mini Album Project - 1032
7. A.C.E Special Album Project - 834
8. A 'Fanspecial' Stellar's Album Project - 764
9. 2017 April Photo Calendar Project - 742
10. STELLAR Single Album Production Project - 622
As photobooks are basically “limited edition” goods, it’s no surprised that they take up half of the spots on this list.
Looking at just the album campaigns:
Seventy-seven groups did a campaign for an album of some kind (mini, single, etc). One could argue that these should be further pulled apart, which is a valid point, but I decided to just do an overview at this time.
The group asking the most was BAP at $32,199. The group asking the least was Blady’s Giru at $2,496. The average asking cost was $7,608.
The group that earned the most was BAP with $150,540.46. The group that earned the least was David Oh with $1,358.66. The average amount earned was $23,689.30.
The group that earned the highest percentage over asking was The Rose at 1305.09%. The group that earned the least percentage over asking was David Oh at 8.03%. The average percentage over asking was 300.13%.
The group with the most donators was BAP with 1885. The group with the least donators was Road Boyz with 39. The average amount of donators was 250.
Overall, since the album campaigns make up the bulk of the overall data, all the outliers are located in this section. This leads to a wide range in some categories and a clear break from the norm in others. Please see below for more details.
Overall album campaigns that asked for the most:
1. B.A.P Limited Album Project - $32,199
2. WE·GIRLS Debut Album Project - $26,774
3. SNUPER Debut 2nd Anniversary Photobook Album Project - $17,671
4. David Oh, single album making - $16,920
5. STELLAR Single Album Production Project - $10,069
6. Heyne Single Album Project Part 2 - $9,374
7. SONAMOO Album Project Part 2 - $9,182
8. Brave Girls Album Project - $9,103
9. 24K 1st Album Project - $8,968
10. NC.A Single Album Project - $8,933
The first 4 of these campaigns are outliers, which I think can be clearly seen in how the amount drops significantly from #5 down. If you removing them and other outliers (say, the top and bottom 4), the asking amount is either between $4,000 to $5,000 or $6,000 to $9,000, and the average drops to $6,979.
David Oh’s campaign is also especially significant as far as being an outlier in that it both asked for a large amount ($16,920) yet earned the lowest ($1,358.66) and had the lowest percentage over asking (8.03%).
Overall album campaigns that earned the most:
1. B.A.P Limited Album Project - $150,540.46
2. A 'Fanspecial' Stellar's Album Project - $94,235.01
3. SNUPER Debut 2nd Anniversary Photobook Album Project - $93,064.17
4. The Rose Mini Album Project - $85,180.44
5. LABOUM Album Project - $75,751.58
6. 14U NEW Album Project - $60,672.29
7. A.C.E Special Album Project - $55,853.04
8. SONAMOO Album Project Part 2 - $54,361.23
9. STELLAR Single Album Production Project - $53,529.00
10. SONAMOO Album Project - $52,284.94
Here, BAP is the only outlier; all the other campaigns (down the full list) drop steadily. But, as I have pointed out before, one would except BAP to be higher.
Overall album campaigns with the highest percentage over asking:
1. The Rose Mini Album Project - 1305.09%
2. A 'Fanspecial' Stellar's Album Project - 1132.42%
3. 14U NEW Album Project - 976.82%
4. A.C.E Special Album Project - 907.21%
5. LABOUM Album Project - 849.93%
6. The Rose Single Album Project - 618.86%
7. SONAMOO Album Project - 592.6%
8. SONAMOO Album Project Part 2 - 592.05%
9. 24K Album Project - 533.75%
10. STELLAR Single Album Production Project - 531.62%
For this category, it’s the top and bottom 2 that stand out (the bottom 2 being 8.03% and 68.85%). Removing them, the percentages jump pretty steadily upward until you get to about the start of this list, upon which it starts to increase more rapidly. The average drops to 282.14% when you remove the outliers.
Overall album campaigns with the most donators:
1. B.A.P Limited Album Project - 1855
2. The Rose Mini Album Project - 1032
3. A.C.E Special Album Project - 834
4. A 'Fanspecial' Stellar's Album Project - 764
5. STELLAR Single Album Production Project - 622
6. STELLAR mini-album production project - 563
7. The Rose Single Album Project - 550
8. SNUPER Debut 2nd Anniversary Photobook Album Project - 529
9. 24K Album Project - 516
10. LABOUM Album Project - 475
The overall range is pretty wide at 39 to 1885, with the majority of the outliers being the top 10 listed above (along with the last place entry at the bottom of the full list). Certainly, that is to be expected when dealing with something that involves “popularity”; but, if we remove the top and bottom 10, the range is then only between 80 to 375, which I think better represents the average.
Looking at just the photobook campaigns:
Seven groups did a campaign for photobooks: April (x2 - a photobook and a calendar), Astro, BAP, EXID, Nine Muses, and Rainbow. The group asking the most was April (photobook) at $31,418. Amusingly, the group asking the least was also April (calendar) at $21,246. The average asking cost was $29,483.
The group that earned the most was BAP with $235,682.38. The group that earned the least was April (calendar) with $40,921.96. The average amount earned was $99,896.11.
The group that earned the highest percentage over asking was BAP at 752.97%. The group that earned the least percentage over asking was Rainbow at 166.74%. The average percentage over asking was 331.91%.
The group with the most donators was BAP with 2800. The group with the least donators was Rainbow with 465. The average amount of donators was 1373.
Overall, photobooks are BY FAR more expensive than albums (only 5 of the 77 album campaigned asked for over $10,000), but also generally bring in a higher amount (photobook campaigns ranked #1, 3, 4, 8, and 10 in the Top 10 overall campaigns that earned the most). The number of donators is much higher as well since photobooks are basically “limited edition” goods. Looking at the numbers, an album campaign tends to have around 100-300 donators on average, but even the lowest photobook campaign had 465. Of the 77 album campaigns, only 10 had a higher number of donators than the lowest photobook campaign.
Looking at just the fan meeting campaigns:
Of the three groups that did a campaign for a fan meeting (100%, BIG, and Crayon Pop), 100% asked the most ($17,416) and earned the most ($63,162.37), but had the lowest percentage (362.68%). Crayon Pop, coming in second on most asked for ($8,608) and most earned ($52,093.40), gained the highest percentage (605.17%), almost double what the other two campaigns had). BIG came in last on most asked for ($6,201) and most earned ($22,973.96), but fell in the middle when it came to the percentage earned over asking (370.47%). As for donators, Crayon Pop had the most with 323, 100% came in second with 276, and BIG was third with 166.
From what I can gather, I believe 100% asked for more because their fan meeting was also partly a concert as well. If it wasn’t for that, I think the asking costs would have been much closer together.
And... that’s it lol enjoy the data! ✌️
