What?

Why am I seeing Jieun hate now? What the hell? Did I miss something? As far as I can tell she hasn’t done anything but have a crush on Sangwoo and act stupid as a result. There’s endless amounts of humans who have done that; come on already. OR if i don’t know about something enlighten me please. Her character’s actually pretty sad and we can guarantee she won’t have a great fate so. If anything y'all should hate Sangwoo more. He’s manipulated her and is treating Bum worse than shit again so he can play his games with her.

What exactly happens in chapter 15 based off of what you've read?

I’ll put a super lazy summary under the cut, but don’t get used to it because starting next week, I won’t be around to answer questions ahaha. Clearly these are spoilers, so don’t read them if you want the full effect from the actual chapter:

A young woman I assume to be Texter #1 clearly has a crush on Sangwoo and is excited to sing a duet with him, but he’s late

We get a glimpse of Sangwoo being two-faced, and then he gets super creepy affectionate with Bum and says things like “today’s going to become an anniversary” and “I’m so nervous; I didn’t realize preparing something for someone else would be something so nerve-wracking and happy” and he calls Bum affectionately by his first name and says “I can’t do this alone, so Bum, you have to help me” and asks things like “You love me?” and someone stop him, dear god

Once in the crowd at a festival performance, Bum realizes it’s his chance to escape, and he tries, but the guy’s all “no you cant we’re filming this, no opening the door, we let everyone know this beforehand???” and Bum’s like “I’m being held captive, please” and the guy’s like “wow are you drunk, shut up, you’re making a fuss” - actually to be more exact he’s like “wow just because we’re not letting you out, saying we’re holding you captive’s a bit extreme, are you drunk etc.”

He tries again with someone else who reacts basically the same way, and then Sangwoo shows up on stage, and Bum is emotionally aggrieved because wow, everyone is loving his abuser, everyone is smiling up at his abuser, and wow his abuser called him gently with that voice - but no, stop, he’s getting confused, he hates Sangwoo so much, he’s terrified of him, he’s disgusted by him, he doesn’t even love him anymore.

He doesn’t love him. Even so, the memories of warmth and moments of kindness won’t let Bum go, so what should he…

Ah, woops, it ended up a pseudo-translation anyway. I kept it pretty brusque because I do want everyone to get most of their enjoyment from the actual chapter once it becomes officially available.

I’ve gotta say, though, if I had to choose one, this is probably my personal favorite scene? It think it was well-executed.

Thoughts on Seungbae, Bum, and empathy

The last chapter keeps haunting me and I want to explore how it could tie in to Seungbae’s narrative and bring some light to this dark situation. Spoilers for Chapter 15 under the cut

I believe that Seungbae is the person that can “save” Bum in more ways than one. He’s shown to be the only character not to buy any of Sangwoo’s shit and is highly suspicious of him almost immediately. He’s also a really great foil to Sangwoo, not being very charming or agreeable, but he is honest. Being the optimist that I am, I think that his persistence will eventually lead him to Bum and he will be able to remove him from the immediate danger that is Sangwoo.

Now Bum has some much deeper issues and chapter 15 highlighted some of those very painful emotions that Bum felt, he actively sought help from two different people, and they both ignored him and brushed him off. He hasn’t had any contact with people for months, and even before being locked up in Sangwoo’s house, it’s likely he didn’t have much contact with people to begin with. This chapter drives home the point that Bum feels that he is a nobody stuck with this monster and that there won’t be anyone that wants to help him because 1) He’s socially inept and not “worthy” of being saved 2) the person holding him hostage is loved by all so of course no one will believe him.

Now who else has felt a similar helplessness? Seungbae has! Remember in chapter 11 when there was a brief flashback into Seungbae’s past? Seungbae’s dad was murdered and the police (represented by this cutesy-creepy smiling cartoon, kudos to Koogi) were rather passive in their investigation, and even pinned some of the blame of Seungbae. He was helpless in saving his father and even shoulders some guilt. He was demoted because of his relentless attitude to catch someone he suspected of a crime but it allegedly turned out he was wrong, he was then moved to another precinct so Seungbae’s now an outsider, and he’s pushed around by his superiors and peers. This could be setting him up to somewhat understand Bum’s situation and the psychological stress he’s been going through.

Hoping that he does save Bum, Seungbae will be able to truly empathize with him because he knows what it feels like to be alone and have no one help you or believe you. And empathy was the trait that apparently drew Bum to Sangwoo in the first place right? Here’s to wishing that he experiences the real thing.
