happy year of the fire horse! 🐎🔥🧧
cultural exchange program: when swedish dala horses celebrate the lunar new year.
i designed this pattern to translate 'fireworks' into the visual language of kurbits (swedish gourd painting). i love how the teardrop shapes work for both flower petals and explosions.
🌿 Adventurous moose on the loose! 🌿 Size: 19cm in length. Weight: ca 500 grams. Up for adoption at nymla.se
To me, she is a mama moose, symbolized by a fancy belly decor. The stamped pattern is inspired by the “kurbits” style, often seen in Dalarna in Sweden. There you also find the traditional craft of the so called “dalahäst” (dala-horse), which are horses carved of wood and painted with the kurbits patterns. The form and the color of the moose is based on the stoneage moose petroglyphs found at Nämforsen, Sweden. So I present to you, a petroglyph dala-moose!
I was at an antique store today and found this chest of drawers that looked just out of Kirsten's collection. The blue perfectly matched her trunk, I wonder if the old owner was an AG fan.
The blue of her trunk and the painting style were chosen for a reason- they match traditional kurbits painting, a style of folk painting from Sweden. It is an exact match to that blue, though, and I'm very jealous of that chest of drawers. I have family heirlooms in that color blue. Here are some more examples of kurbits- called rosemåling in Norway (and sometimes Sweden, but I'm used to hearing "kurbits"). Painting like this is all about creating a sense of comfort and design in everyday objects- you want to feel joy every time you open it up or look at it, especially if you're trapped in your cold house through the long Swedish winter.
Dream a little dream that grows. Hello!
finally I get a reason to draw kurbits :D!! Makes the dream a little more surreal looking.
My Little Nordic Pony aka a fjordicorn
SWIPE ⤀ Currently engaged in creating new work inspired by #Scandinavian #rosemaling (decorative painting), in #Sweden it's called #kurbits (after the gourd featured in many paintings). A kind of #folkart that imitated the carved #rococo scrollwork in architecture, peasants would decorate all manner of objects and interiors with the flourishes. An anecdote about the Nazi occupation of #Norway (1940–1945) is that at a time when the public display of the Norwegian flag or the State Coat of Arms could bring imprisonment or even death, the Norwegians discovered that they could display the 'H' overlapping the '7' of the Royal cypher of their exiled king, Haakon VII, at the center of a rosemåling design without the German occupation forces seeing anything but a colorful peasant design. There are several style types, some which originated in the lands of my direct ancestors, and I've included a few of my faves here! Check my stories for more...
