I know this is pretty random and sorry for that lol but don't you think it's quite interesting how The Phantomhives (Vincent's date of birth, Claudia's date of death, the twins current age) AS WELL AS Undertaker (through his Shinigami registration number) are the only characters in Kuro associated with the number 13? I feel like the relationship between Claudia and Undertaker has released a curse over the entire family, maybe the love between a human and death god is utterly prohibited in (1/?)

Haha, indeed, it obviously doesn’t seem random! What’s even funnier is that when you check out precisely Claudia’s death day and Vincent’s birth day...

...it turns out they both were a Friday the 13th, a day notoriously associated with bad luck nowadays. 

And yep, as such, it’s been imagined by the fandom before that maybe Frances’ birth day too was a Friday the 13th (and since we know Frances is younger than Vincent, I think @abybweisse researched which dates could possibly fit). If not her birth date, maybe her death day will be one. Would be morbidly funny.

Oh that’s for sure! In fact, it’s been said before that shinigamis are forbidden to play around with life and death, so it is definitely certain that romance between a human and a shinigami would indeed be prohibited. 

At the same time... it’s not like the Undertaker cares anymore about the rules ever since he deserted, especially if the reason he deserted is related to finding out some grim truth about the Organization. 

We already know he’s been cheating death by working on his bizarre doll project, so indeed it wouldn’t be surprising to me that he also went against the rules even earlier by possibly making a family with Claudia.

As for whether or not it cursed the Phantomhive family, be it directly or indirectly, it is possible! 

I know some fans vouch that Queen Victoria found out about the Undertaker being a Shinigami and that it is why she ended up getting rid of both Claudia and then Vincent, but I disagree. If the love between UT and Claudia cursed the family, it’s definitely by UT’s own design.

I definitely agree! In fact, Vincent’s words in this chapter...

...actually sum up all arcs of Kuro so far when you think about it. So in my opinion, it’s definitely not a stretch to imagine that he might be referring to his sons, as well as, possibly, to his very own parents. 

Again, I don’t think Victoria found out about UT being supernatural and killed Claudia as a result. In fact, I’m more on the side of the opposite, as in, it’s the love between Albert and Victoria that eventually killed Claudia and possibly Vincent [short version][long version]. 

However, as we’ve seen in the story so far, UT’s been pretty hell bent on bringing as many Phantomhives back as he can (real!Ciel and I’m sure Claudia is next on his list since Vincent can’t be brought back), most likely because they’re the family he made with Claudia and he can’t give up on the souvenir of that love. 

At the same time, it’s also very tragic because the Phantomhives are a very loving family [x][x], so it cannot even be said that they’re entirely responsible for their recurring terrible circumstances (in other words, there is indeed a big bad that is external to the family). 

TL;DR yep, this family is cursed. We been knew. xDDD 

What’s funny is that I think Sensei just loves showing us just how many curses one can sprinkle over the same family, possibly starting from their lineage to the youngest son selling his soul in order to get revenge. 

I’m a fan of revenge stories though, so that’s why I’m still in it after all this time, to figure out what exactly killed the last two generations. :))) So yes, VERY interesting!

Okk but like... was Vincent blind or what? How didn't he see that Undertaker was carrying a funeral locket for his mother? I mean it has the hair, death date, name and the whole deal on it.. and I'm pretty sure he was carrying it around the time he was still alive. Do you think that maybe he knew that Undertaker had a thing for Claudia? Or at least that they were kinda close? Now that I think ab it the same goes for Frances.. still i bet Vincent had more interactions with UT, so he has no excuse xddd

It’s not because we never saw him address the subject in the very few flashbacks we had with him (without mentioning we never saw him directly interact with UT at all), that he didn’t actually notice. :)

Depends on what theory you favor about the Undertaker’s link to the P family Anon, but personally, since I think UT might be Cedric K. Ros--, as in: 

he took that identity back when Claudia was alive,

possibly married her (becoming the previous Earl Phantomhive before Vincent) and fathered Vincent and Frances, 

disappeared because of great sorrow after Claudia’s death 

only to come back at least 3 years later as “the Undertaker”, after Vincent was already out of Weston and working with Dee

Well, considering this theory, I personally think it’s not unlikely at all that at least Vincent knew UT wasn’t simply a random mortician who happened to be interested to work as the Watchdog’s evil noble.

I mean, he did say this in the special chapter: 

And while it’s true it can have several meanings, considering that these words come up just when UT gave up his higher-ranked ribbon to try bringing Vincent back, in my opinion I think Vincent’s words were probably mostly directed at UT’s actions. 

As for Frances, it’s definitely harder to be sure but...

...it’s not like she reacted to UT’s words in ch151 either, so in my opinion, she has a good hunch as to what’s up with UT.

In fact, she’s probably our best chance of actually finding out more about UT, since Othello only knew him pre-desertion and I doubt Tanaka will start talking anytime soon (especially since he’s still at the P manor, while Frances could meet with our!Ciel more directly). 

TL;DR as always in Kuro, it’s not because a plot point is not addressed that it’s debunked. Quite the opposite, especially for this topic, considering that on-screen interactions between UT and his possible children are almost non-existent (ch151 is the only example so far and it’s already hinting at a lot). 

In other words, I think Vincent knew something was up with UT (@ his mom), whether or not he noticed the lockets. As for Frances, we don’t know if she reached the same conclusion when Vincent did, but by now, it seems likely that she knows UT’s not some random dude either.

Kuro extra ch107.5: a testimony to the characters’ agency

Kinda (super late!) companion piece to my take on overused comic relief being foreshadowing, especially since Sensei or Editor K did say that we could take that extra chapter as foreshadowing. 

Let’s start with Vincent then, since I made a post on the subject before: i.e Vincent’s offering us the intro and, more importantly, the conclusion to this extra chapter... 

...which happens to be a summary of one of the main themes of the series. 

It’s also relevant for him to be the narrator of this extra chapter, taking on the role to bring wise words to us readers, because Vincent always expected to be killed several years before it actually happened, even if it’s likely that he never tried to do anything to escape this fate. 

It was also pointed out before that, back when he was still alive, he had weird moments of foreshadowing/breaking the 4th wall as well, which fits with his behavior in that extra chapter.

Vincent’s dead though and personally I doubt he’s coming back, so let’s move on to the rest of the cast in this chapter. 

First, where our main characters (Seb & Ciel) are concerned, there is...

...literally nothing to add. xDD Just kidding, but for real, we know that Ciel is after revenge and that Seb enjoys playing the butler in his little game with Ciel, meaning he’s just chilling till we get to the revenge part lmao. And that’s it. Next.

Let’s talk about Druitt, who organized this event... 

seemingly innocent and kinda stupid as always at first...

until his true colors are revealed, which was exactly the same in the JTR and Campania arcs. 

That’s why we can expect more involvement in the current arc or even in future ones, because Druitt tends to get involved in many messes of his own will (and always in relation to selfish interests), even if...

...he’s not particularly dangerous on his own. xD

Since I don’t have a lot to say about Irene Diaz, because she’s pretty secondary, we’ll move on to Charles Grey, who has a history of getting in the way (the murders at manor arc) because not very fond of our!Ciel, but that’s nothing to really worry about because...

Lizzie is a skilled fighter too and the extra chapter does foreshadow that, at some point, they’re probably going to face each other, on a matter that will most likely be related to our!Ciel (current arc?? idk maybe?). 

Speaking of Lizzie, her agency is described loud and clear in the extra chapter...

...which happens to be similar to Finny’s...

and since they’re both sweet children, I hope they’ll live long lives and that our!Ciel will one day thank them for their devotion. 

Moving on to Snake, who was also present...

...this is particularly interesting, because it seems that a main part of Snake’s agency will always be related to his bonds to Noah’s Ark circus troop, which is probably foreshadowing that he may be conflicted when he finds out about what our!Ciel and the rest of his servants did to them.

Does this mean that he will leave the Phantomhive household or that he’ll forgive Ciel and his colleagues, I don’t know, but I think it’s rather clear that Snake will find out pretty soon about what happened to Joker and co (could even happen in this arc by the way, so brace yourselves folks).

About Grell now...

...I think we get it. Next.

Let’s talk about Lau, whose behavior in the extra chapter is particularly on point with how he generally acts in the arcs Ciel asks him to get involved, which is to say...

...that he always does whatever suits his best interests and he’s generally not bothered no matter what happens, be it Finny becoming a giant or Seb and real!Ciel coming back from the dead. xDD

That’s why the extra chapter foreshadows (in my opinion) that one day, once our!Ciel will stop being of interest to him, Lau will stab him in the back pretty naturally and with no hard feelings. 

This leaves us with only Frances and UT and well...

...if the extra chapter doesn’t foreshadow that Frances is rarely bothered to ever get involved (the current arc anyone?) then I don’t know what is. 

I mean, crazy business is literally happening right under her eyes and she’s neither shocked, nor fighting or running away, just calmly supporting Lizzie’s wish to be of support to Ciel and handing her own rosette to Seb when they all ally to get rid of the giant snake. 

You can take it as her being fishy or as her being 100% confident that her kids will be alright as long as they’re together, just like it might just be that she wasn’t supposed to get a lot of panel in that chapter, either way it’s interesting. 

As for the Undertaker, the extra chapter makes it pretty clear that...

...he’s trying very hard to bring the dead Phantomhives back from the dead (confirmed in ch140 to be his main motivation so far), but this chapter also may have hints about...

what his link to the P family is. There we go, that’s basically everyone. 

One more thing I gotta point out though: most of the characters in this chapter fought over higher ranked-rosettes than their own, because it was supposed to grant them more power. 

Therefore, I find it’s particularly interesting to look at those who didn’t get involved, aka those who didn’t care about getting more power, because it tends to hint about fishy (or more complex) characters in general. So who are they? 

Well, there is Seb, because he had the highest ranked rosette in the first place, but also because in general he doesn’t care about much besides getting Ciel’s soul for his dinner. Pretty simple, but then again, Seb’s character is exactly that way. 

Ciel too, which is pretty revealing of his motivations in the story, because he cares about getting revenge over his enemies, yes, but he already has the strongest weapon at his disposal (Seb), so he doesn’t have to wish for more.

Again, I won’t ramble about Irene Diaz, not that I don’t like her (I do!) but she’s pretty much foreign to the main plot and that’s probably why she didn’t care to get a higher ranked rosette (instead probably running away or something). 

Lau’s case however is particularly interesting, because we know he only cares about meeting his own interests and yet he didn’t seek more power. 

That’s probably why he’s currently the most mysterious character of the story, because Sensei said before that he’s very interested in Ciel (and not in Seb), but that might not just be about business only. 

Maybe as long as Lau is entertained (as he said in ch13) that’s enough to keep him still and that’s why getting more powerful for no particular reason doesn’t tempt him? 

Next before last is Frances, neither bothered by the situation nor seeking more power, even very willingly giving her rosette to Seb when he needed it (following Ciel’s plan), which is pretty weird.

I mean, not only could she have wanted more power for many reasons (like keeping her kids alive for example or getting revenge by herself for her family), but the fact that she handed her rosette to Seb and literally left (she didn’t go back to the manor to have dinner with the rest of them) may hint that she only intends to be helpful without seeking more powerful means.

It could be a hint that she knows that powerful means may cause (or have already caused) the downfall of the rest of the family (look at Ciel selling his soul), or it could simply be because she’s pretty realistic like her brother (Vincent never tried to avoid his fate despite knowing he would die young). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Once again though, I notice a parallel between Frances and Ciel (friendly reminder that Seb once said he’d like her to be his master’s mentor), neither seeking to be more powerful than they already are, despite their family’s tragic circumstances (Ciel because he already has Seb and Frances because ??).

And finally, the Undertaker, who didn’t seek to get more powerful either. 

In fact he even gave up his own rosette at the end for the sake of trying to bring Vincent back, which is once again pretty in tune with how he’s ready to sacrifice literally everything to help salvaging the Phantomhive family. 

And if that doesn’t betray how much he loves them all (he’s the only one who did that in the chapter, knowing that no rosette = no panel) then I don’t know what is.

That’s about it. :)) Long post that’s, like, 3 years late, but thanks for reading as always!

You guys ever wondered about how Vincent seemed to find perfectly normal that UT would try super hard to bring him back in the extra chapter?? Especially since that sentence “love is wonderful thing but it can also give birth to horrific disaster” could be meant for either the twins or UT @ the P family?

......Btw did I mention this super crack theory I once had that Frances was the one who burnt down the manor 4 years ago somehow? I mean, I 99.9999% doubt it’s really the case but just humor me for the sake of crazy thoughts™.

We know UT apparently wondered about bringing the dead back, or at least about editing the cinematic records, before he even deserted:

So if he already had something like the bizarre doll project in mind before Vincent was even dead (to bring back the people represented by his lockets for example), and if Vincent somehow knew about UT’s plan to bring back his mom or even him should something happen...

Then if he told his sister about this detail, Frances showing up on December 14th for one reason or another (since Ann was coming too) could have rescued Tanaka before setting the manor on fire so that...

UT wouldn’t be able to bring back her brother. (I’m aware that burning her home or her brother’s dead body + Rachel’s appears awful and heartless of her, but frankly I can also see how the thought of her dead family being brought back could motivate her if she believed UT was mad enough to attempt it) 

I know that we’re 27 volumes in and we have 0 idea about if UT and Frances even know each other (though everything about their respective character implies that Frances would probably despise UT if they do), but we know that Frances really cares about her family and that she and Vincent were close siblings.

Ch132 even hint that she seemed as aware as Vincent that he wouldn’t live a long life, most likely because they both had their mother’s example in mind (or even simply because they were realistic), but we don’t know what else she might be aware of or not. 

Personally I like to think that she and Tanaka are 100% on the same side and mainly that he keeps her updated about how Ciel is doing so that she won’t step into her nephew’s life too much...

and since it appears Tanaka was aware about the twin coming back, I’m not sure, but maybe UT’s plan of bringing back the P family one by one because “he simply cannot bear to lose another Phantomhive” was not an entirely new idea before the Campania arc for some characters. 

As I said tho’ it is pure crack, because for now it makes more sense that Frances was at home on December 14th + that the supernatural being who attacked the manor was the one who started the fire (either accidentally or not, à la Seb), but I felt like sharing, especially since we have yet to see any reaction from Frances about what happened 4 years ago and that’s fishy for me. :3

(also that could explain why Vincent was chilling and apparently totally aware that UT was trying to bring him back no matter what in ch107.5)

About Vincent’s attitude in the flashbacks (ch131/132)

I want to address two different things, the first point because it is strange, the second point because I saw a lot of possible misunderstanding.  

1) Vincent and foreshadowing

I want to talk about this scene that left me a bit ???...

because nothing particularly important is being said and yet Vincent says something that sounds like a premonition with a rather ominous face and what made me address this is that it’s not the first time. 

So, here I am, wondering if the possible regular pattern doesn’t mean something in particular, because we also had a possible foreshadowing moment about the current arc (probably referring to the twins’ conflict itself) from his own mouth in ch107.5…

And I already made a post on the subject, but in ch131 we had several Evil Nobles showing up on the same day as Vincent asking Diedrich for a favor, namely, to look after his sons should anything happen to him, 3 years before anything actually happened to him, as if he was expecting something to happen to him soon.

…going as far as to add after “You never know”:

In case you were wondering, yes I know this sounds crazy and I had never considered something as random as “Vincent had small precognitive powers” before this chapter, but I find that this makes for a strange and regular pattern.  And yes, for all we know, it’s just Vincent breaking the 4th wall because Yana enjoys writing him like that, but still...

We also know, thanks to ch103, that the Phantomhive family share a special lineage, even if the details are still unknown to this day, aside from the fact that it allows our!Ciel to see Shinigamis when he shouldn’t be able to. 

Obviously it’s hard to reach any conclusion until we see more flashbacks of Vincent, but it’s something to keep in mind in my opinion, just in case it’s useful later. x)     

2) Vincent and our!Ciel

This other point focuses solely on ch132 and starts with this scene:

Judging by Vincent’s silent glance, I agree with @akumadeenglish‘s interpretation that he was carefully observing his sons’ reaction and ideas at the time. The big question is, whose words did he appreciate the most?

I know many might think that it’s real!Ciel’s, since he seemed like the perfect heir when our!Ciel was weaker and not supposed to inherit anything, however I think ch132 is actually full of hints that Vincent took a real interest in how our!Ciel was thinking.

If you don’t believe me, take a look at the discussion with Frances:

...because Vincent initially seemed to be quite out of it as she made her point that the Watchdog duty would be too dangerous for our!Ciel, going as far as to answer pretty dismissively to his sister...

But I personally didn’t read this scene as Vincent just shrugging it off because he didn’t care about his second son dying, or what should happen to the family if his heir died, but rather because he simply didn’t agree with Frances on the matter of our!Ciel not being strong enough to take on the Watchdog duty. 

The second hint is that he took both his sons with him when he went to inspect the domain...

...even though many readers interpreted his words from before as not being very trusting of our!Ciel’s abilities. However, if he really didn’t think that our!Ciel could be a good and strong heir, then why did he even take him with him and real!Ciel in the first place? Why didn’t he appear to educate them differently, except maybe when it comes to fighting?

Finally, not everyone might want to call these hints, but this is Vincent in the side story With Father! and ch107.5:

And he doesn’t seem to particularly dislike the fact that our!Ciel is the current Watchdog (in case you were wondering, he never calls him “Ciel” so we can safely assume he knows which son’s adventures he’s reading x)). 

So back to this scene...

I think he actually found our!Ciel’s words interesting because, compared to the twin, our!Ciel’s proposition seemed more genuinely good-hearted and thus different from what he might have been expecting from a potential future Watchdog. However, this isn’t really surprising when we know what our!Ciel wanted to do as an adult and why.

Our!Ciel is kinder at heart and appears to be more selfless than his twin brother and I believe Vincent caught on that through our!Ciel’s answer (”granting everyone’s wishes sounds difficult”) & that it's what possibly interested him.

Because friendly reminder again that Vincent said that Kuroshitsuji (so literally our!Ciel acting as the Watchdog) was “interesting” and that it was something “the Undertaker recommended”, which means that Vincent seems to agree with UT when it comes to our!Ciel:

3) Conclusion?

1 => I don’t know how seriously we’re supposed to take Vincent’s words when he speaks about the future (see the examples above), because there is still a possibility that Yana enjoys breaking the 4th wall with using his character.

However, considering we still know nothing about how supernatural the Phantomhive lineage might be, I’m going to keep these examples in mind just in case there is a reason Vincent can foreshadow things.

2 => I don’t think Vincent ever casted off his second child (our!Ciel) as being weak, useless and not making for a good heir because:

he didn’t want to address the subject with Frances

he took our!Ciel along with real!Ciel when he explained what the duties of a lord were

there are hints that he shared UT’s opinion on how interesting it is that our!Ciel appears to act and think differently from the rest of his ancestors.

Vincent’s words in Ch108,5 ending, what's the meaning? twins or others?

Actually, I think this scene refers to several things because “love” (and what’s affiliated to it) is a central theme of Kuroshitsuji.

The second part of Vincent’s sentence is definitely foreshadowing though, and not just about UT’s wish that Vincent would come back to life but also regarding the current arc since the extra chapter was published just before ch108. So, depending on what’s the truth behind the current arc, Vincent’s words can mean different things:

he might be speaking about real!Ciel’s brotherly love turned into this obsession that is to stay forever with our!Ciel

if UT is the mastermind, maybe he’s speaking about how UT’s desperation when it comes to bringing back people led to terrible consequences

if someone else is the mastermind, maybe he’s speaking of the reason behind their actions and how, again, it triggered terrible consequences

look at Agni, or even those people who died after giving their blood

who knows, maybe he’s also speaking about Lizzie herself.

Vincent’s words also fit for subplots outside of the current arc’s though…

JTR arc: Ann and her love/obsession for Vincent => it’s more complex than it looks and it’s not the only reason but, associated to losing almost her entire family, it played a role into her becoming Jack the Ripper.

Curry arc: Agni’s love for his master led to him trying to hide the truth about Mina, but in exchange he had to comply with what Mina’s husband asked of him. I believe no one died, so there is that, but he almost physically hurt Soma at some point in the arc, despite revering him so much. 

Circus arc: Kelvin’s “love” (obsession really) for Vincent and his sons => it completely triggered this insane change and he ended up joining the cult (tbh we don’t know if he was already a part of the cult before he met them, but nonetheless, his crazy transformation about becoming “beautiful” had to do with meeting the P family)

this led to Joker and co having to put up with Kelvin’s craziness and being associated with his crimes, because they wanted to protect what they thought was left of the orphanage, despite it being already gone.

Campania arc: we know UT got curious about “what’s after the end credits” before he even deserted, but the reason he is trying so hard to bring back people might have to do with him losing people he deeply cared about and becoming desperate

hence the horrific disaster, because his BDs certainly were deadly and he now is a mass-murdering bastard

also look at Stoker’s love for medicine: it took him too far as well, even blinding him to the point he didn’t realize that he wasmanipulated.

Weston arc: yes it works too, because the love the ex-prefects of Weston had for their school and traditions led to them making too drastic choices when it came to protect both. 

GW arc: Wolf’s loyalty to Sieglinde aside, her mom and the other people who surrounded her only pretended to this whole nonsense out of devotion for their country/government and its plans for a big war. 

Overall, from another standpoint, look at the Queen and her Albert: this part is still very mysterious but there is no doubt that she’s kind of obsessed with him and who knows what terrible things her love for him, even if he’s dead, might push/have pushed her to do.

also who knows if, by acquiring the technology to bring the dead back, she might not want to bring him back too, leading to more disastrous consequences probably.

…because love leading to awful disasters is a central theme of Kuroshitsuji. :)

Y’know, that’s why I say that Vincent is more observant than we all seem to give him credit for [x][x]: he described in one sentence the simplest way to summarize almost every subplot so far. That’s why he’s so hard to read, he might appear to be aloof…

but that’s definitely not all that there is to him, hence surely why he always sounded like he expected to die soon.

I don't know if you noticed but in the special chapter before the blue cult arc, Vincent is drinking the same glass Undertaker had before giving him the ribbon. Could it be that they had similar tastes in alcohol? One hint that they were related maybe?

I mean, maybe they have similar tastes for alcohol, maybe UT was drinking this because Vincent used to and he was nostalgic, maybe it’s as you said… Hard to say, because the only thing I think we can say for sure is that…

UT has a sweet tooth.

So do you think that undertaker wants Vincent to be back as a bizarre thingy?

Hello! Oh, well, UT wishes to bring Vincent back alright…

but that doesn’t mean he thinks he can do it with the Bizarre Doll project since he has no locket for Vincent.

Just to make things clear about the theory concerning the chain with the lockets, UT said…

…that he started getting curious about what editing the records would do “after spending a long time as a Shinigami”, which means that we can’t be sure whether he had already deserted or not when he started wondering. 

In any case, the “first locket” is about a person named Molly/Mally who died in 1837 and as you can see below:

Not every locket seems to contain hair (Molly’s, Gilbert’s, Emile’s). 

So the fact that Vincent doesn’t have a locket, despite UT apparently still mourning him so much (ch105, ch107.5), seems to have nothing to do with his body being burnt badly and UT not recovering any hair to make a locket for him. 

That’s why I think that this chain with the lockets is related to the Bizarre Dolls project in the first place (as in, he started experimenting and created Bizarre Dolls because ultimately he wanted to bring back these 7 people), and Vincent not having any locket might mean that UT doesn’t think that he can bring him back through the BD project because…

his body was too badly damaged when he was killed. 

TL;DR I think UT’s chain with the lockets is still relevant to his current goal(s) and the BD project and it’s also a part of the reasons why I’m, for now, not convinced that he brought the twin back in the current arc (for more details, see here).
