Hachidai Shrine 八大神社

The description on the first plaque:

"This shrine was established in 1294. with "SUSANOHNO - MIKOTO" as the main deity. Known as Northern Gion", people pray here for Happiness, Success in business, studies and marriage etc. Miyamoto Musashi, Japan's greatest Swordsmaster defeated the Yoshioka school nearby at Sagarimatsu" after praying at this shrine. Preserved here is a section of the famous "Sagarimatsu" pine, under which they fought."

They also enshrine the other Yasaka kami like Kushinada-hime.

They had beautiful arrangements around the shrine, as well as replicas of the spears that adorn the top of the yamaboko during the Gion Festival.

"SAGARIMATSU

This ancient piece of wood was a section of a pine tree called 'Sagarimatsu' here in Ichjoji in 1604, when the splendid swordsman Miyamoto Musashi fought around it and won the day ageinst the Yoshioka Family famous for skilled fencers"

It was also amazing seeing so many auxiliary and side shrines. However, the point of this shrine that I felt was the most stunning was their selection of Goshuin. In fact I ended up purchasing 5 of them. 2 sets of 2 page spreads, and a regular Goshuin to go into my goshuincho.

This first one showed Susano'o no Mikoto and Kushinada-hime! I loved how they came together and formed that heart with the shrine seals! And how colorful it is.

This one shows the famous swordsman Musashi Miyamoto as well as some adorable squirrels and fall foliage.

And this is the one I placed in my Goshuincho.

"The daughter of the two Kunitsukami (Ashinazuchi 足名椎 • Tenazuchi 手名椎) who Susano'o no Mikoto (→P76) saved from Yamata no Orochi.  Yamata no Orochi was an head headed and right tailed monster from Koshi no Kuni 越の国 (present day Hokuriku region), who every year would travel to Izumo and eat a young girl.  When Susano'o no Mikoto descended to Earth in Izumo, it was Kushinadahime no Mikoto, the eighth daughter of Ashinazuchi and Tenazuchi's turn to be eaten. 

Kushinadahime's name means "Splending Princess of Rice Fields," but it also carries the implication of the comb as a magical tool.  When Susano'o no Mikoto fought Yamata no Orochi, he transformed Kushinadahime no Mikoto into a comb and wears her.

After defeating Yamata no Orochi, he took her as his consort.  This is said to be the origin of marriage that continues to today."

"She is the first wife of Ōkuninushi no Kami (→P80), descendant of Susano'o no Mikoto. When Ōkuninushi no Kami was younger, he angered his older brothers, the Yasogami, by outwitting them and married Yakamihime no Mikoto of Inaba, who then aimed to kill him. So he headed to Ne no Kuni to ask for his ancestor Susano'o no Mikoto's aid. There he met Suseribime no Mikoto.

It was love at first site, and she became Ōkuninushi no Kami's consort.  So he could safely overcome the trials imposed by Susano'o no Mikoto, she gave him a hire (scarf like shawl) to calm snakes. On the other hand, she was prone to acts of extreme jealously, which Ōkuninushi no Kami became fed up with."

“The child born between Ninigi no Mikoto (→P88) and Konohanasakuyahime no Mikoto.

Hikohohodemi no Mikoto’s older brother Hoderi no Mikoto, was quite skilled in matters of fishing, and was also called Umisachihiko 海幸彦. On the other hand, Hikohohodemi no Mikoto was called Yamasachihiko 山幸彦, but one day, he lost his older brother’s treasured fishing hook that brought fourth his fortune, he ended up heading to the palace of the sea kami Watatsumi no Kami to search for it.

Welcomed by Watatsumi no Kami, he took his daughter Toyotamahime no Mikoto as his consort. Watatsumi no Kami then ordered the fish to find the fishing hook, and bestowed upon his son-in-law a gem that could control the ties. Hikohohodemi no Mikoto returned the fishing hook to his brother, then using the gem, forced him to surrender.”

“Both are daughters of Watatsumi no Kami (→P100). Toyotamabime no Mikoto was bonded with Hikohohodemi no Mikoto when he visited the palace of Watatsumi no Kami looking for his older brother’s fishing hook. Afterwards, they returned to land to give birth. However, when Hikohohodemi no Mikoto was building the birthing hut, and thatching it with crane feathers, Toyotamabime no Mikoto went into labor.

As a result, Toyotamabime no Mikoto returned to her true form (in the Kojiki this is described as crocodile, but it’s believed to be a shark instead), while giving birth. Hikohohodemi no Mikoto saw her true form, angered she returned to the sea. However, concerned for her child, she sent her younger sister Tamayoribime no Mikoto to care for him.

She became the child’s (Ugayafukiaezu no Mikoto 鵝葺草葺不合命) wet nurse, and eventually his consort, later on giving birth to Emperor Jinmu (→P120).”
