L.S. Lowry. The Haunt. 1969
Walking Up Devonshire Street to the light rail stop from Work in the style of L.S Lowry. An impossible view, the Dove and Olive is not that close to the Shakespeare. The white buildings are the social housing which are also on the opposite side, but might as well be on that side as well. Up from that is the Shakespeare Hotel (Shakey's to the locals and working class, not the civil servants like myself). It's clearly an old Anglican pub, because it's such an English name. Beyond that is the Trinity Hotel, which is clearly the Catholic one. Light rail tram coming up the hill as people walk up.

I am in Cambridge from time to time, and stumbled across the small gallery that Downing College has opened just behind its porter’s lodge. The current exhibition–its third–has borrowed works from Kettles Yard (currently closed for rebuilding) and Richard Long to create an exhibition themed around the idea of landscape.
Kettles Yard being Kettles Yard, there’s a fine selection…

It’s all there. It’s all in the sea. The battle of life is there. And fate. And the inevitability of it all. And the purpose.
- Lowry
Lowry’s seascapes are less well known but among his most emotional paintings. Stark, bleak, comforting, calming and powerful… like looking at infinity… and into the unknown. He felt things deeply, always searching for meaning in life. And it was the sea that gave him answers.
