Doodle of the day! Meet Lá Lùa - one of @quilloftheclouds characters from One Siren’s Soul - or at least my interpretation of them :)
Là is a forest siren who’s weak with magic and was subsequently kidnapped, then barred entrance to the Havens whenever they escaped, so they learned how to fight. And fight well. It’s a fascinating story and they’re only one of the many colorful members of the OSS cast (all of which I absolutely love) so since I’m slightly better at drawing fins than I am at people, and it’s MerMay, I decided to sketch Là today! I’ve since been informed that she looks very different from this actually, so this isn’t official or anything, but I had a lot of fun drawing this anyway!
Ahira is actually one of my favourites, despite being rather a jerk! I'm very excited to be able to write them soon. :D
Ahira's full name is Ahira idu Ren'esyani. The "middle name" for sirens acts as a title/rank moniker, like "Doctor" or "Captain". In Ahira's case, "idu" says that they're a haven's Star Keeper. (Or, well... they were.)
Ahira's dead. But not really dead dead. Their soul's still around, their body's just been gone for centuries.
Ahira hates Dione Nikolaeva with their whole being. Which is weird, considering they died a full century before the witch was even born.
Star Keepers and other sirens of highly powerful bloodlines can see lost souls, but anyone with lesser magic can't. Too bad Ahira's now a lost soul themself. :I
Ahira's child is still alive, though! That's Lá Lúa! Lá plays a far greater role in the series than I've shown so far~
“Oh? There’s an oath, now? A promise of peace. I was never offered any oath, temporary or permanent...”
Meet Lá Lúa, Lost Child of the Lyrae Haven and the Exiled Half-fin!
... The world of magic isn’t very friendly to those born without.
“You’re saying that for two decades I’ve been barred entrance from your pretty little perfect Havens, forced to survive on my own when our species is meant to be communal, and all I had to do was take some star-forsaken OATH!?”
Theme: Imagine Dragons - Believer
Pronouns: They/Them/Their or She/Her
Age: In their early four hundreds. Which is odd, considering their name is a finling’s...
Siren Type: Forest; freshwater but used magic methods to adapt to survival in saltwater.
Magic Colour: Vivid leaf-green
Magic Level: Lowest of the ranks. Barely has any magic, only enough to sustain the most basic of spells.
Base Appearance: Based off of a green/blue and black metallic half-moon betta: green and blue shining scales edged with black; labyrinth gill structure, so they require oxygen from the air as well as the water; and incredibly large, round, black ribbed green/blue fins.
Lá is the sole survivor of the Lyrae Haven Massacre. Despite being the only child of a renowned Star Keeper, Lá was born with severely limited magic. Because of this, she was taken instead of killed when the humans ravaged her home, sold and subjected to terrible acts of abuse. When she finally escaped, she believed herself free, believed she now had the chance to be accepted, to find a true home and another family.
Except all Havens she went to refused to allow her in. You see, Forest sirens are always supposed to be pacifists. The kind that never seeks violence, using their magic to avoid it at all costs. Lá Lúa didn’t have any magic to fall back on. She had to fight to get her freedom. And she enjoyed it. The other Forest sirens didn’t like that.
So they lied to her and called her an exile.
This has got to be the character I’ve been the meanest to. Gotta be.
Sorry, Lá. ;n;
Lá is a fairly major character in book two! They finally gain entrance to a Haven with the main crew’s help~
Also maybe a siren to sing me to se- I mean sleep?
[Send me an emoji and I’ll talk about a related OC!]
lskgjldksg I love how absolutely random a 📬 (mailbox) and a 🛁 (bathtub) is to receive. XD
I’m not really sure on the mailbox! Maybe... hm... oh! Though I’m not sure yet if it comes up in canon or not, Sunny from The Mirror’s Rifts has a penpal she exchanges letters with! Sunny loves using the fanciest of sparkly gel pens and stickers to pretty up her letters~
And for the bathtub! You know that trope? Mermaid in a bathtub? Of course Anchored Souls has its own rendition, though its a lot less. Happy. So here’s your siren! While Lá Lúa was still trapped from being captured by humans, they were kept in a glass fish tank just barely large enough for their body. (And Lá Lúa is big for a siren.) That said, she was in a coma during that time, so didn’t move much, but it still sucked.
I always enjoy providing worldbuilding details through the exception. It mimics real life in that, yes, there’s pretty much an exception to everything, and it also follows the reality that you shouldn’t judge someone based on where they’re from or what they look like.
Sylvie: *From a siren type known for aggression and violence* I just... I just want to research history... I just... want some peace and quiet... *Is shy and timid bean*
Lá Lúa: *From a siren type known for their pacifism* SCREW THAT I WANT COOL SCARS Y’ALL ARE IDIOTS *Proceeds to nearly get themselves killed several million times and gets themselves exiled from every single Haven in existence*
These two have to work together at a part in book two and uh. You can probably assume there’s going to be chaos. ^^
[Send me a letter and I’ll tell you about an OC who’s name starts with it!]
@laufire you also asked for an ‘L’, so here’s one for you!
Letttt’sss go with Lá Lúa!
Full Name: Lá Lúa (Officially, this is her name. Unofficially, her name is something else that’s a big spoiler. ^^’)
Nickname(s): Lá, Leaf, Snapper (The last one is mean, don’t call her that. .n.)
Hogwarts House: Slytherin
Gender: Nonbinary, They/Them and She/Her pronouns.
Sexuality: Questioning (definitely on the ace spectrum, though.)
Associated Song: Believer - Imagine Dragons
Three Important Relationships:
Sharaku Hana - spoilers spoilers spoilers
Dione Nikolaeva - more spoilers
The Scientist - EVEN MORE SPOILERS what a surprise! /s
Two Fears:
Being forgotten or going unacknowledged.
Losing those she cares about.
Element of Backstory: Born to a siren type known for their powerful magic, but born with extremely limited magic herself, Lá was often teased by other finlings when she was young. Her only way of defending herself was by physical means--clawing, scratching, biting. She was called Snapper as a result, and not in a nice way.
[Send a 🎵 and I’ll tell you what from my wip I associate with a random song!]
Warriors - Imagine Dragons and cover by 2WEI & Edda Hayes
Oh ohhh! I love this one!
So fun fact: before this came out, the original Warriors by Imagine Dragons was on Captain Xuân’s playlist. I originally loved the lyrics and they also fit really nicely in with Captain Io’s story, too, but the general theme of the song wasn’t quite serious enough to fit on her playlist. So when this cover was made, I absolutely loved how epic and cinematic it sounds!
As a child you would waitAnd watch from far awayBut you always knew that you'd be the oneThat work while they all play
In youth you'd layAwake at night and schemeOf all the things that you would changeBut it was just a dream!
All of these lyrics fit so well into Captain Io’s backstory: she was always training and working as a child, when any other kids (including her own sister) would be having fun with games and mischief. She so very thought she could change the world, make it better for her sister and her, but... it just didn’t end up happening. She changed, and not in the way she had wanted.
This song also makes sense with Lá Lúa! Lá was born a siren type that is known for their powerful magic---only problem? Lá had barely any magic, if at all. So all those games that the other finlings would play? The ones that relied on magic? Unh unh. What about even just every day tasks that would be so so easy for everyone else? Maybe they just take a small charm? Nope. Lá wanted to make things accessible to those like them. Reality got in the way. (That’s still their goal, though.)
Anyways, I just. Really really love cinematic pieces like this one because I daydream scene ideas to it really well! It’s so epic and inspirational!
