Edith Crawley in Downton Abbey 1x06
Laura Carmichael in Downton Abbey (2010)
Because, in the end, you're my sister and one day, only we will remember Sybil... or Mama or Papa or Matthew or Michael or Granny or Carson or any of the others who have peopled our youth... until, at last, our shared memories will mean more than our mutual dislike.
#OTD in 2010:
Mr Carson: “The Dowager Countess.”
Dowager Countess: “Oh my dears, is it really true? I…I can't believe it. Last night he looked so well. Of course, it would happen to a foreigner. It's typical.”
Lady Mary: “Don't be ridiculous.”
Dowager Countess: “I'm not being ridiculous. No Englishman would dream of dying in someone else's house. Especially someone they didn't even know.”
Lady Sybil: “Oh, Granny, even the English aren't in control of everything.”
Dowager Countess: “Well, I hope we're in control of something, if only ourselves.”
Lady Mary: “But we're not! Don't you see that? We're not in control of anything at all!”
Countess of Grantham: “Edith, go and tell Mary to come back at once and apologise to her Grandmother.”
Dowager Countess: “No, leave her alone. She's had a shock, we all have. Just let her rest. Oh, just the ticket. Nanny always said, ‘Sweet tea is the thing for frayed nerves.’ Though why it has to be sweet, I couldn't tell you.”
#DowntonAbbey 1.3
My English teacher was introducing our new assignment today and it's free choice. He gave us a few ideas for texts to write about, one of which being Downton Abbey. I proceeded to lose my shit over this because holy shit I live that show so much.
Laura Carmichael
Sitting here trying to remember if Edith ever mentioned Sybil after season three, outside of her wedding day speech to Mary, or if it was just Cora and Mary going "Oh dearest Sybil, we evoke your memory for plot purposes!"
...unfortunately I haven't time to rewatch the whole thing...
