Dowager Countess: “Oh my dears, is it really true? I…I can't believe it. Last night he looked so well. Of course, it would happen to a foreigner. It's typical.”
Lady Mary: “Don't be ridiculous.”
Dowager Countess: “I'm not being ridiculous. No Englishman would dream of dying in someone else's house. Especially someone they didn't even know.”
Lady Sybil: “Oh, Granny, even the English aren't in control of everything.”
Dowager Countess: “Well, I hope we're in control of something, if only ourselves.”
Lady Mary: “But we're not! Don't you see that? We're not in control of anything at all!”
Countess of Grantham: “Edith, go and tell Mary to come back at once and apologise to her Grandmother.”
Dowager Countess: “No, leave her alone. She's had a shock, we all have. Just let her rest. Oh, just the ticket. Nanny always said, ‘Sweet tea is the thing for frayed nerves.’ Though why it has to be sweet, I couldn't tell you.”
-How could I forget Rose Leslie is in this first season?
-Jesus, Daisy looks like a baby.
-Thomas, my favorite little shithead.
-William, I forgot all about him.
-I’m so used to Anna wearing black from the later seasons that seeing her in the maid uniform is weird to me.
-I hate that Daisy must hurry back downstairs before she’s seen by any of the family. It’s just so rude.
-That’s ridiculous to me that they have to “iron” the newspaper before Robert gets it.
-God, everyone looks so young and some of the cast’s hair looks a lot darker than I remember.
-It’s also crazy to me that the Titanic sinking is what kick starts the main plot to this whole show.
-Mr. Bates!!
-I forgot how unpleasant Miss O’Brien is.
-The first interaction between Mr. Bates and Anna.
-Jesus Mary, your father just lost his cousins and so did you, you could be a little more sympathetic.
-Violet!! The queen of the show has arrived.
-Cora: “Are we to be friends, then?”
Violet: “We are allies, my dear, which can be a good deal more effective.”
I love Violet.
-What’s wrong with being a doctor?
-Daisy, you are so fucking lucky that William forgot your instructions and came back downstairs with the poison.
-Why does Mr. Carson dump the liquor through that white cloth? I mean, I get it’s probably to filter it, but why does he have to?
-God, I love scenes between Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes. Also, love the first little hints of their relationship.
-Cora: “How’s Bates working out?”
Miss O’Brien: “Well, I don’t like to say.”
But you will anyway, won’t you, O’Brien?
-God, I forgot how full of herself Mary was in the beginning.
-Also, the subtle hints of the rivalry between Mary and Edith are done very well.
-Robert clocking how O’Brien is trouble and always whispering gossip in Cora’s ear is interesting this early on. I mean, it’s great cause it shows that some of the family aren’t completely oblivious to what their staff do or say, but it’s also frustrating cause if he knows this why he hasn’t done anything about it.
-Violet: “Don’t you care about Downton?”
I love how dramatic Violet can be.
-Anna: “Well, I’m going to my dinner. You two can stay here plotting.”
Jesus, everyone knows Thomas and O’Brien are trouble. They are not subtle at all.
-HOW DID I FORGET THAT CHARLIE COX WAS IN THE FIRST EPISODE OF DOWNTON?!?!
-O’BRIEN YOU BITCH!!!!!! I forgot she tripped Mr. Bates and made him fall in front of the Duke.
-It’s crazy to me that Mary can be so dismissive of the staff yet thinks it’s disrespectful to go into their living quarters. Mary’s such a complex character and I forgot about that.
-I’m glad that Mary has some sense of embarrassment when they’re caught by Mr. Bates.
-Mary: “I always apologize when I’m in the wrong. It’s a habit of mine.”
Do you, Mary? Also, is it a habit?
-Wow, I forgot that Robert fired Bates in the first episode. Wait, so what happens because I know he comes back.
-Freaking Edith trying to start trouble and everyone else trying to shut her up or change the subject.
-Not Anna seeing Mr. Bates sobbing in his room.
-I love that Anna backed up and called out to Mr. Bates so that he has time to compose himself.
-God, Anna already looks in love with the man.
-I swear, I think if he could have gotten away with it, Robert would have punched the Duke in the face and tossed him out of the house.
-Wait, do we not see Matthew at all in this episode? I could have sworn we did.
-Edith: “So, he slipped the hook?”
Mary: “At least I’m not fishing with no bait.”
God, they’re so mean to each other.
-Do you really want to be with him Thomas or is he just a means to move up in the world?
-That’s why he wanted to go through the servants’ quarters. He wanted to find Thomas’ room so he could get the letters.
-Okay, so Robert has a change of heart. That’s how Mr. Bates stays.
-There they are!! Hello Matthew and Isobel!!
-Wow, that’s how they ended the first episode? With a quick introduction of Matthew and Isobel? Wow.
