tw: brief mentions of miscarriage and suicide attempt
the dichotomy of the level of stakes in each episode of Downton Abbey will always be funny to me. Some episodes are like
âThomas is on the brink of being fired for being gayâ
âitâs the actual World War Iâ
âSybil could very well die in childbirthâ
âBates has been arrested for a murder he didnât commitâ
âone of the staff caused a MISCARRIAGE of someone from Upstairsâ
âThomas has been found half dead in a self-inflicted bloody bathtubâ
And then other episodes are like
âWill Carson let the staff go to the town fairâ
âwho will win the flower competitionâ
âThe cooks dropped the chicken on the floorâ
âSybil is wearing pantsâ
âBranson is still fraternizing with the Downstairsâ
I am on your side.
DOWNTON ABBEY: THE GRAND FINALE (2025)
Directed by: Simon Curtis Screenplay by: Julian Fellowes
fuck it tom branson is a fake demon who ends up enjoying capitalism the real socialist is thomas barrow and no one will change my mind.
thomas would be talking shit of the king with carson telling him to not talk bad of the monarchy while stepping on england so thomas would stare at him dead in the eyes, sit down and lift his feet so they wouldn't touch the ground as he resumes talking shit
... so breaking abbey broke me bad
ko-fi
I will forever hate the way the show frames Thomasâ âuppitinessâ & all his airs and graces as a bad thing when⊠Carson does the exact same thing and not a single brow could be raised.
Like when he insists everyone calls him Mr Barrow, itâs for a reason, heâs had a promotion & itâs a mark of respect that they should adjust as such. Just because someone like Anna doesnât do it (which is mostly to prevent confusion anyway) doesnât mean he shouldnât?
Iâm not saying he isnât rude with it. But if Carson was in the same position - he would blow a gasket & do the exact same.
Does Thomas take this behaviour too far? Yes. He outright bullies William but he also is just doing what he sees Carson doing - William is a little late? Tell him itâs unacceptable. (Yes they are basically in the same position but Thomas is still that little bit senior.)
Like⊠Carson tears a strip out of William for having a split seam in his livery - I know Carson is in charge but is that behaviour not the same?
I think itâs pretty clear where Thomas learnt it.
And I can perfectly imagine Carson making the leap from footman to Butler or Under-Butler, however he was promoted, and being uppity with it. I highly doubt that he was ready to let anyone call him Charles anymore - but this is a mark on Thomasâ character & not Carsonâs?
