They are separate. (Mostly)

Depending on the romance option, romancing someone else alongside them would be considered cheating. And gods, the confrontation scenes are not fun. There was a time when I considered polyamory or side relationships for some of the main characters, however, that's too much fucking coding and I am but one woman.
