Chapter 7 How a Hop Garden is to be Planted and Maintained

1 § Every house must have a hop garden, and the peasant shall plant good roots every year for forty staves, until there are two hundred of these for a complete house. Whoever does not do this shall be fined one thaler for each year, and shall nevertheless plant as stated, unless it is found that the hop garden cannot be planted there or maintained there.

2 § The lawman shall bring charges in the autumn assembly against anyone who has not planted a hop garden in this way, and shall collect the fine before St. Thomas day. If the lawman neglects to do so, he shall pay the fine himself.

3 § If a peasant already has a two-hundred-stave hop garden, he shall maintain it, and increase it if possible. If he allows the hop garden to deteriorate, he shall be fined one thaler for each forty sols. If he leaves it completely deserted, let him pay a fine of ten thalers and make the hop garden anew.
