settler colonialism involves the subjugation and forced labor of chattel slaves, whose bodies and lives become the property, and who are kept landless. Slavery in settler colonial contexts is distinct from other forms of indenture whereby excess labor is extracted from persons. First, chattels are commodities of labor and therefore it is the slave’s person that is the excess. Second, unlike workers who may aspire to own land, the slave’s very presence on the land is already an excess that must be dis-located. Thus, the slave is a desirable commodity but the person underneath is imprisonable, punishable, and murderable. The violence of keeping/killing the chattel slave makes them deathlike monsters in the settler imagination; they are reconfigured/disfigured as the threat, the razor’s edge of safety and terror.

Early stages of development on Landless have begun!! I currently have a few concepts sketched out including a rough design for the main character, Alexander, and the captain and first mate of the pirate ship Hellmaiden! I haven't gotten very far yet but I will post more concepts when I make them. I appreciate all the support you guys are giving me for this project and I can't wait to finally get the first page up, let alone the whole first installment in the series (if I decide to make it a series; we'll see where it goes). Anyway, I'll give you more news on Landless as soon as I have some! You guys are going to love it. Also, I will be creating another blog based around Landless so I can post stuff about it there. I'll reblog this later with the URL so you can follow it.

Since I don’t think I’ve obsessed over this band or this record enough, I will take the liberty of doing so now! I was fortunate enough to see Portland’s Eight Bells play a mesmerizing set opening for SubRosa back in November, and their sophomore release Landless quickly landed itself among my top albums of 2016. It’s not hard to hear why. Available for purchase & streaming on Bandcamp.
