just started chief of war & i didn't realize how much of the dialogue was in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. obviously important within the cultural/political context of the show's setting as well as the present, but also such a gift for language perpetuation and preservation.

I think a lot of people who speak a widely spoken language do not understand how hard it is to find books/movies/shows/audio in so many languages + how many people rely on those formats to learn/retain language in the diaspora

This feels like a good time to share my one of favourite Fun Facts about the word fuck and that is that it was SO common in Middle English that there are multiple extant attempts to Latinise it bc English writers writing in Latin just could not manage without it.
