Language headcannons for the Elric Brothers

Ed and Al learned Latin so they could study ancient alchemical texts, they could read and write before they were 10 and completely fluent by the time Ed takes the state alchemists exam.

They speak in Latin to have private conversations, but most alchemists have a general idea of what they're saying since you have to learn a fair bit of it to research alchemy. Hardly any of them took it to the same level as Ed and Al tho.

Al learns Xingese because of course he does, but Ed can never pick it up. He won't admit he's slightly jealous.

They can both read ancient Xerxeian but don't realize it. They think it's just Hohenhime's code for his notes, but never realize he has published books in his collection in the language.

Ed would learn Spanish if it existed.

Personal HC, if you're ever reading my fic and Wren and Teldryn are interacting (just the two of them), just know they're speaking a weird, casual mix of Dunmeris with some common/Tamrielic thrown in. They only stick with full Tamrielic when they're in the company of others.

This is mainly due to the fact that neither of them want to lose the ability to speak their primary language, so what better way to stay fluent than to speak it with one another? They each have slightly different dialects, as Wren's family is from mainland Morrowind and Teldryn grew up on Vvardenfell, but they can still communicate without issue.

Multilingualism is so hot! How many languages can Vincent speak, and what are they?

Based on the movies he knows French (of course!! :3) and Spanish, along with English. But based on a deeper analysis + headcanons, his total comes to about six languages! From highest fluency to just understanding, here they are:

French, Spanish, English, Italian, German, Latin :)

Learning another language is hard, okay?

After talking in one language it can take a sec to just immidiately switch back (or at least for me. I’ve begun many a sentences in the wrong language)

*Jason is talking to some witnesses who only speak Spanish and then goes to report back to Batman*

J: *to batman* esta es la situación... what the fuck?

*shakes his head* here’s the situation

B: Pigeon?

D: yes.

Reporter: how old is Damian?

Tim: thirty

R: um...?

T: wait, no, fuck. ThirTEEN

Bruce: I’m trying to be more hands on with our Japanese business partners. Can you proofread this, because I’m not sure what case this verb is supposed to be in

Tim: Fuck, Bruce, neither do I ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Bruce: You’re fluent in Japanese

Tim: maybe so, but do you know all the english cases?

Bruce: yes???

*a few weeks after Dick arrives at the manor and Bruce is doing his best to learn Romani and he’s tucking Dick in before bed*

Bruce: *in Romani trying to wish Dick good night* Good baguette, Dick

Dick: *nodding proudly* Good baguette, Bruce

But speaking of which, they all react differently to Bruce making mistakes in their first languages

Dick: yes, you’re doing so good. I’m proud

Jason: *has a literal list of Bruce’s fails and makes a t-shirt out of them*

Tim: *tiredly* mood

Damian: *corrects Bruce on everything, especially pronunciation, but he’s secretly very proud*

Fun Fact: Kevin knows and can speak Spanish. He doesn't remember learning it, but his mother taught it to him as a child. He's not completely fluent when speaking, and some verbs get jumbled, but he can understand it perfectly when it's spoken to him.

like in every single one of my headcanon he knows sign language

not always for the same reason, but it's just kind of become an integral part of how I think of him as a character

in some headcanons he's deaf or hoh, in some he's a coda or someone he knows is/becomes deaf and he learns in order o communicate with them meaningfully, or he just took classes for it at school because  the other language programs at his school were shit and why the heck not
