We are all Trishawn
On Monday, April 13, we will meet at the LACAN office 838 e. 6th st. at 8am, or at the Criminal Courts building at, 210 W Temple St, Los Angeles, CA 90012 at 8:30am For More Information: https://www.facebook.com/events/1615900011978109/ Trishawn Carey is being held by the LAPD as a political prisoner. She has a $1,084,000 bond for the "crime" of being a witness to LAPD murder of Charley Keunang, also known as Africa. Trishawn Carey was assaulted by LAPD officers just prior to the murder of Africa, then beaten on video, and arrested and charged with Assault on and officer. As a community we must realize Trishawn Carey represents our struggle for a free, just, and humane society. Trishawn not only received state sanctioned violence from the Los Angeles Police Department but also is experiencing poverty- a form of state violence that society wishes to hide in dark corners- to be neglected and forgotten. Most of the laws created to respond to or prevent violence against women are often limited to the domestic sphere. They require- before intervention by government institutions- that the woman must have suffered violence repeatedly, continuously, and that the violence must be serious or led to her death. However poverty robs over 1 billion people of their right to food, shelter, basic health care and education, and extreme POVERTY KILLS. Of the roughly 1.4 billion people living on less than $1 a day, 70% are women and girls. These inequalities limit women’s access to basic resources. Women are exponentially more vulnerable to all forms of violence- sexual, physical, emotional, and psychological. And when a woman is experiencing poverty and seek public benefits they are looked at as freeloaders, welfare queens, or irresponsible mothers Trishawn Carey is fighting against violent forces that were attempting to disappear her life before Africa’s murder and now even more. The state is running at her in full force to prevent her from speaking TRUTH to POWER. Trishawn represents the struggle of all the residents of Skid Row and those, especially women, denied basic needs worldwide. We must stand for Trishawn Carey. We must let her know she will not be silenced. We will stand and shout her story. We are all Trishawn Carey!
