Last Drinks
He sauntered in from the kitchen with a bottle of Jack and a slurred song on his lips. Alex sat on the floor looking up at him.
"Do you really think now is a good time to get drunk?"
A scream rang out somewhere in the distance and then the silence of the house returned with only the unflinching tick-tock of the grandfather clock keeping it company.
"There’s ne’er a good time an’more now is there?"
Another scream and the crack of a gun are drowned by the tolling of the grandfather clock and the hour of dusk.
He walked over to the door and leaned against it and slid down till he was sitting next to Alex.
"There’s just no time an’more."
He held out the bottle. Alex swapped the pistol from one hand to the other and looked at the bottle and the black label and the white letters and inhaled the fumes.
"You know I’m a recovering alcoholic, right?" “Then recover already n’ take a drink.”
Flashes of what constitute an alcoholics memory ran through Alex’s mind. Blackouts. Hangovers. The looks from family and friends and lovers. Prison. AA. Four years, one month, and twenty-nine days.
Alex took the bottle. A loud blast and shook the house. Feet pounded the pavement outside. Screams and screeching and shouting and shooting. All rising with the dark. Alex took a long pull.
"Look on the bright side," he said, "You won’ ‘ave any time to reg’et your relapse."
Alex smiled.
"No regret time. No good time. No time at all. But why is there always time for one last drink?"
Pounding at the front door rattled down their backs but the whiskey helped subdue their jittering fear. They both stared down the hallway and tried to focus on the tick-tock of the grandfather clock. Screams. Screeches. Tick-tock. Pounding. Pounding. Tick-tock. Cracking. Smashing. Tick-tock. Shouting. Shooting. Tick-tock.
Silence. Tick-tock.
Last drinks: Brain’s mechanism knows when to stop
A new brain imaging study in Australia found a “stop mechanism” that determined brain signals telling the individual to stop drinking water when no longer thirsty. The study, which used magnetic resonance imaging, also gauged the brain effects of drinking more water than required.
