Latching On
Narvi was curled up in the chair in the library. The large one that could fit her and the two youngest in the chair with her. Which was the position she was in. Originally she was reading a book, and Aksha and Destin had fallen asleep curled up against her. Destin was what Asgard called a “Breast baby” Meaning he liked being close to her chest. Narvi had assumed that it was the bond, the fact that he occasionally latched on over her dress had her thinking along those lines. Instead of sucking his thumb, he would try to feed. Which had her producing milk a lot longer than expected.
Narvi had started to fall asleep as well. Holding the kids close to her, so they wouldn’t fall off the chair out of reflex. To the point where she didn’t feel him actually latch on and suckling. It wasn't that she was overly tired, just cuddling with her kids made her relax. It wasn’t until Destin had bit her, lightly that she woke up.
The bond made her not want to detach him. But he was also 4 years old. They were trying to really get him off the breast milk. It wasn’t like he wasn’t eating... he just naturally did it. But she gently, and not waking him up, pulled herself out of his mouth and thought to the Doctor, where ever he was in the tardis: “He latched on again... and now I am lopsided.”

Amazing! 1-hour-old babies crawl to breast to feed
by Michelle Stein posted in Mom Stories With a collective 2.5 years of breastfeeding experience under my belt, I thought I had researched everything about early nursing -- until I watched this mesmerizing video and witnessed the breast crawl for the very first time. Did you know that most healthy newborns, when placed on directly on their mothers'... Want to get the full story? Click on the headline above. Latching On
Once you're in position it's time to help baby latch on. Make sure their mouth is open wide. You can touch their chin with your breast (either continuously or lightly tapping breast to chin) and this will usually cause them to open their mouths as a reflex. Line up their nose to the nipple, this will help them position to get enough of the areola in their mouth at the right place. They also know the breast by smell and touch, so going nose first helps them know where they are going. Hold baby so they can tilt their head slightly back, where shoulders are tight against your chest and legs tight against your body. This makes it easier for them to swallow. Their chin should be angled out from their body going at the breast first. It's easiest to do this if you are supporting their head with your wrist. Your hand should be at their back with fingers behind their ears or if you are both on your side, with your fingers supporting to lower cheek.
Baby doesn't like their head pushed towards the breast, so be gentle, don't apply pressure to their head. Don't allow their feet to push against a hard surface, this can sometimes cause them to jump out of your arms. Don't leave open spaces between you and baby, it works best if you are touching all of their body to yours as they will want to wiggle around and fill the space and won't get comfortable. When you're feeding straight up and down, give baby a gentle push behind the shoulders as they take the areola in their mouths to encourage them to take it deeper. A shallow latch doesn't provide as much milk and it can cause breast pain. After baby is latched look to make sure their nose isn't blocked. If it is, bring their bottom in closer so their head will go back and free up their nose.
If you still need help, you can hold your breast and press it gently into a wedge. Your fingers should be parallel to baby's lips. Make sure to hold the breast well back from the areola and away from baby's mouth. Again, make sure that the nipple is aligned with the nose and not just straight in the mouth. Use a rolling motion to put the breast into the mouth, rolling the underside into the breast first.
One way you can tell the latch was too shallow is if your nipple comes out of baby's mouth looking distorted or smashed. This is caused by it not getting to the soft palate at the back of baby's mouth. Other nipple trauma and pain is usually caused by a shallow latch. If baby quickly loses interest in feeding and falls asleep, feeds all the time, or isn't gaining weight, those are other signs that they aren't getting a deep enough latch.
