So.. i found out that it 'we all' commonly agreed that the HOBBIT movies were bad... What have i missed, cause i thought they were quit good- They had great actors, good CGI, gave the songs and dwarfs a fresh breath of air and (at least in my eyes) stayed true to the book! But then again i am might be wrong on that!! I can't think of a bigger Hobbit fan than you. So please, if you'll be so kind to enlighten me :) Thanks...
SURE!! So I mean most of this just comes down to personal preference. Much of the complaints I’ve seen from haters and lovers alike was the amount of CGI and often compare it to LOTR which didn’t use as much CGI (but we all remember this… is this not just as embarrassing sometimes though even more so???) But I’ve never had that much of an issue with the CGI either? So it’s all just personal preference.
Other complaints I’ve heard include:
Why the fuck did they make it three movies? It’s just bad if you stretch it out that much. Not to mention the fact that the battle was like one page in the book!!!!! Why would you make a whole movie based on one page in a book!!! What the fuck was with the Smaug mousetrap ridiculous plan at the end of DOS? The dwarves never even saw the dragon!
It was nothing like the book! Why was Legolas there so much? Why did we have to have Tauriel?
The last movie was ridiculous. Too much CGI.
The dwarves still weren’t that fleshed out. Bombur was only there as comic relief about how fat he is. The rest of the dwarves have distinct personalities but we still don’t really see them. (Other comedy grabs that might leave a bad taste in your mouth: Alfrid in a dress.)
In my personal response to these:
1. I love they made these three movies. We got so much more of the characters and more of the story than we would have gotten with one film. Yes, it was a cash grab, but I don’t fuckin care. I get more time with these characters in this world so fuck off. Yes, the battle was one page in the book. But is that an exciting cinematic conclusion to this journey? Cover this extensive huge battle between FIVE ARMIES in like ten minutes? Is that what you wanted? If you’re gonna do a battle, do a fuckin battle. Give us epic moments and intense fighting. THAT’S WHAT WE WANT TO SEE IN BIG BLOCKBUSTER MOVIES RIGHT??? Same thing with Smaug. It was fun and actiony interlude to bring us to the conclusion of the series. It wasn’t spot on from the book, but I never had an issue with it (and frankly loved it so much!! Especially to see Thorin leading his people and in Erebor against the dragon IT WAS JUST COOL, MAN.
2. The book was shallow at best when it comes to what was going on to the rest of the world during that time. I like the fact that they gave us a little more insight into what Gandalf was dealing with along with what was going on with familiar faces from the LOTR series! Yes, some of the Legolas bits are a little Too Much™ (i.e. gravity defying jumping up the stones of the collapsing bridge thing?) And no I’m not the biggest fan of elves, but it’s cool to see how this quest effects the world at large. There’s also a million other meta’s about what a great addition Tauriel was to the series (love subplot aside) so I won’t go into that too much, but also I love Tauriel a lot so….
3. We covered the CGI point above….
4. THE DWARVES WERE AMAZING. Sure I would have loved more concentration on the dwarves and their relationships throughout the three movies, but it’s absolute insanity if you try to flesh out thirteen main characters. It would be a trainwreck. The movie would be 30 hours long and you would lose the main story if each dwarf got their own character arc. (But that’s what you have fanfic and fanon for.) Other ‘comic relief’ elements, are unfortunate and most fans I know acknowledge some of this stuff was not a great addition to the movie.
But in the end as long as we know this movie isn’t absolutely perfect, we can still love the movies to death for what they gave us. There’s so much more positive stuff about the movies than the negative stuff. There are always fans that have to find fault in everything and that’s true pretty much universally with any fandom/movie/tv series/books/etc. (I live with one. My brother’s favorite hobby recently is complaining about Star Wars even though he’s a huge fan of all the movies, series, etc.)
tl;dr it all comes down to personal preference. Some people had more of an issue with things than others. We know that no movie is perfect, but to most of us fans it’s pretty darn close to perfect for us!!
