Finally got around to finishing this piece since January. Had a lot of fun painting this. Biggest pain in the ass was just painting the alien laboratory building.

ok i might be overthinking this but: the magmarang, right? it’s a creature in subnautica that lives in the lava zone, which is the deepest biome and like literally a volcano. the magmarang is a hand-sized boomerang-shaped fish that’s a relative of a surface level herbivorous fish just called the boomerang; it adapted to live in the lava zone. it’s the smallest creature in this zone, so it’s probably the bottom of the food chain.

there are no plants in the lava zone. i imagine that the other, larger creatures of this biome eat each other, since they appear to be carnivores. but what about the magmarang? it’s the smallest fish in this zone and probably the only herbivore, but there are no plants??? so how does the ecosystem function at all down there? does it just… eat lava??? even if it’s carnivorous, literally what other animal would it be able to eat?? everything else down there eats it! anyway i’m confused.

I went to the lava zone and got lost there for an hour. Being lost down there with all the damn sea dragons IS NOT FUN. I was just driving in circles bc I had no fucking idea where I was. It’s very hard to see down there. But I survived...
