For myself I have to read the Bar's Code of Conduct in an ice cold bath in order to restrain myself from saying exactly what I think about the harm they do to the Rule of Law. Suffice it to say if a criminal justice system is worth having it is worth paying for.

And paying reasonably for. Criminal barristers, contrary to what some 'newspapers' would have you believe, do not earn a king's ransom from taxpayers' money. It's been some years since the Ministry of Justice quietly stopped publishing the mendacious 'Fat Cat' list.

One reason, no doubt, was the obvious and precipitous drop in the sums being earned. Criminal barristers of 2020 are earning less in REAL not RELATIVE terms than their 1990s forebears.

The fact is that these 'journalists' are confecting a story and in so doing overlook the biggest criminal justice scandal of our lifetime which is the almost complete seizing up of the criminal justice system.

Without mincing my words there are children out there who have been raped whose rapists are not being brought to justice because the government is incapable of operating a working court system. This is as true for the victims of any crime you can think of.

There are, no doubt, people in society who think it's an outrage any money is spent on criminal defence. Pandering to them is a dangerous game that will cause injustice and the fraying of the ties that bind us. An equal society demands that Justice's scales are equally poised.”-Maximilian Hardy
