So honest post right herr & (yes also my judgements): here’s an excerpt from my blog I urgently wrote after being inspired by my teacher. 👩🏽💻For a good while I was highly turned off from my decision in becoming a yoga teacher AND I even blogged about it back then lol. Talk about my Scorpio rising coming out, but I digress. Back to my aversion to yoga. I noticed how yoga is so highly commercialized, stylized, sensationalized and more often than not gone to the opposite spectrum of the ancient practice. I was turned off by the fancy poses, the photo shoots, half naked women/men, the vinyasas, oh the vinyasas, the, “I’m really fucken spiritual look at me”. When in reality their “spirituality” started & ended in the ability to teach yoga/simply contort into shapes. It’s based on a facade, the external show rather than the internal work. Most importantly I loathed how it became an ego stroke. I was like WTF did I get myself into?!!😫 But the story ends well and I found my voice and figured out that my ability to be me and own it was my ticket. I may come off as fake to some & that’s fine too so I can also be apart of what I’m talking about. I just know that now I’m not trying to fill someone else’s box. This stuff is all me. The out there beliefs I have, the strong passion to be not only preach light but also let you know that I’ve been in grimy spaces too. I say this a lot but it’s not all 🌈 &🦋 How do you choose who you practice with, teacher/guide/energy practitioner? I’ve truly transformed my life through being humbled by nature and my practice. Transitioning from one place in our lives to another is like an unmasking of who we really are. I founded Inhale to Rise as a way to share my energy as a yoga teacher and my identity at times when I wasn’t sure who I really was. As a yoga teacher my main goal is to inspire others to be authentic and nurture their own adventures. The past several years I’ve looked deep inside to connect with the person I’ve always known, but was afraid to introduce to the world. I’ve learned to trust myself and be courageous in new ways that are liberating. This has been a deeply private and meaningful chapter of my life and I wish to share more about it as I open up. The pictures I present are the places I’ve paused, to inspire myself to keep breathing in life and be thankful for everything I’ve been able to experience. These adventures have been my muse and carried me through hard times. I hope others can find nature as the tender, blessed resource that I have. I’ve looked out into the glory of nature and truly wondered, wandered, listened. Using my practice to stay grounded, I am able to express myself better and more happily now. I want to thank everyone who continues to support me, it has meant a lot. This is who I am, far into this journey, I keep coming back. I want to thank everyone who called or texted me regarding being laid-off from CorePower Yoga--means so much to be thought about and cared for! The circumstances that brought me to my mat and CorePower were similar to this current mess: having what you know and what is familiar to you be pulled out from under you. What came from that time between 2008-2010 was a new life focus, a new community, and a fresh perspective on what I was capable of. I know it will be the same once this current crisis is over. I am enjoying taking Yoga classes online from my CorePower colleagues and finding other workouts to keep my practice and body up to speed. Aside from the Friday meditations, I am feeling as though this break is a good time to assess this aspect of my world and find other ways to channel my passion and knowledge in Yoga, aside from leading others on the mat. As some of you who follow me on Facebook have seen, I am fighting the battle of #AB5, which has undercut my writing and reinvention coach business, basically killing my other livelihood. Despite what you might have heard (or not heard), this law has little to do with gig workers and Uber and Lyft drivers. Our blessed California politicians have made it illegal for any independent contractor: freelance writers, Yoga instructors, translators, interpreters, musicians, and a host of other professions to work for themselves. In a time when working from home is being encouraged, our idiots in Sacramento have restricted independent contractors and small businesses from doing this in order to earn a living. To add craven injury to insult, they are even targeting companies that hire fellow Californians in order to penalize and audit them. As if they have nothing better to do. So, it's actually nice to now have more time to focus on that fight, and I am gaining a whole new community and friendships with others who are also in the battle. I have re-launched my political and pop culture column at Communities Digital News, and am looking toward the creative opportunities that are often born out of chaos. Over the last 5 weeks, it has been a privilege guiding these beautiful ones further along in their teacher journeys. These 4 fabulous instructors taught their last two Community Classes on Wednesday, and knocked it out the park! We celebrated with sugar (Donut Friend, yummmm) and high fives all around. Are you interested in growing as a Yogi and a teacher? Well, time sure does fly when you're breathing and moving! I am so grateful for the students, opportunities to lead, and opportunities to grow that @corepoweryoga has provided these past 8 years. I started this teaching journey in midlife, so this George Elliot quote holds true: "It is never too late to be what you might have been." Here's to many more years of becoming, wherever the Yoga takes me! #attitudeofgratitude #cpyjoblove #layoga #layogi #lateacher #whatayogilookslike (at Pasadena, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7oIfqiHbGN/?igshid=1vz4pu40ek13f
