The personalities of the gym leaders REALLY shine in this volume and while normally I think focusing on side characters during important plot events can be kinda dumb, it really really works in this arc– the side characters have unique personalities, depth, an actual important role, and are in general just enjoyable to read about! I actually enjoyed watching Aqua / Magma vs the Gym Leaders more than I enjoyed the entire Seafloor Cavern sequence
Maybe it’s just me but I think that Kusaka is especially talented at character creation and usage– the whole world feels lived in because each of the characters feels like their own person with more depth that the story could ever give us, and I feel it makes the scope of the entire arc feel that much bigger. Spe side characters for the win baby

In my new alpha sapphire run, I've been able to beat both Roxanne and Brawly with just my overleveled grovyle! I could probably beat the entire game with one pokemon if I wanted to.
