𝐊𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫: A-(으)ㄴ 척하다, N인 척하다, V는 척하다 ✏️ 𝐔𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞 - This expression is used to describe the act of pretending to do or be something while not actually doing or being it in reality. The description of what is contrary to reality appears in the clause preceding the expression -(으)ㄴ/는 척하다.

  E.g. 나는 태연한 척하며 웃었지만 마음속으로는 아주 불안했다. (I pretended to be calm and smiled, but I was actually very uneasy at heart.) ✏️ 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬 (1) When using the verb 알다, only the present tense should be used, not the past tense.

E.g. 나는 잘 알지도 못하면서 안 척하는 사람이 제일 싫어요. (X) ᅳ> 나는 잘 알지도 못하면서 아는 척하는 사람이 제일 싫어요. (o) (I hate people who pretend to know something even though they don't know it well.) (2) When using in the past tense, -(으)ㄴ 척했다 is used to describe a situation where the subject acts as if they had done something, but in reality, they did not actually do it. On the other hand, -는 척했다 is used to describe a situation where the subject acts as if they were in the process of doing something, but in reality, they were not doing it at all. E.g. 음식이 부족한 것 같아서 저녁을 먹은 척했어요. (Because it seemed like there wasn't enough food, I pretended as if I had eaten the dinner.) ᅳ> In fact, the speaker hasn't had dinner yet, but pretends to have had dinner. 다이어트를 하고 있어서 음식을 먹는 척했어요. (Because I were in a diet, I pretended as if I had eaten the dinner. ᅳ>  In fact, the speaker hasn't eaten yet, but pretends to be eating. (3) When using with noun, the form  N인 척하다 is used. E.g. 두 사람은 친한 친구인 척했어요. (They pretended to be close friends.) (4) 있다 and 없다 always go with 는 척하다. E.g. 음식이 너무 짰지만 맛있는 척하고 먹었어요. (The food was too salty, but I pretended it was delicious and ate it.) (5) This expression can be replaced by -ㄴ/은/는 체하다 in all cases without meaning change. E.g. 이 대리님은 사장님 앞에서만 열심히 일하는 척합니다. = 이 대리님은 사장님 앞에서만 열심히 일하는 체합니다. (Manager Lee only pretends to work hard in front of the CEO.) ✏️ 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 1. 지성이 또 시험에서 떨어졌다면서요? - 네. 아무렇지 않은 척하지만 속으로는 마음이 안 좋을 거예요. (I heard Jisung failed the test again. - Yes. He pretends to be fine, but I'm sure he doesn't feel good inside.) 2. 그 사람과 같이 우산을 쓰기가 싫어서 우산을 가져온 척했어요. (I pretended to bring an umbrella because I didn't want to share umbrella with him.) 3. 그들은 서로를 모르는 척했어요. (They pretended not knowing each other.) 4. 내 동생은 엄마가 방에 들어오면 공부하는 척해요. (My brother pretends to study when my mom comes into the room.) 5. 요리를 해 준 친구의 성의를 생각해서 매운 음식을 잘 먹는 척했어요. (Considering the sincerity of my friend who cooked for me, I pretended as if I eat spicy food well.) 6. 똑똑하지 않으면서 여자를 앞에서 똑똑한 척하는 남자가 너무 싫어요. Introduction:

In this lesson, you will learn how to add ~별 to nouns and the meaning it creates. You will see that it is often attached to nouns to describe another noun, or used with ~로 to act as an adverb. Let’s get started.

~별 is added to nouns that represent more than one type or level of something. When this is done, it classifies the different types/levels and indicates that something is done (separately) for each type/level. For example:

수준 = level 수준별: There could be multiple levels of something (for example, high level, medium level, low level). Here, something will be done separately for each level.

성 = sex/gender 성별: Of course, there is more than one sex/gender. Here, the sexes will be classified and something will be done separately for each sex.

학년 = a grade level in school (1st grade, for example) 학년별: Here, grades within a school will be classified and something will be done separately for each grade.

부서 = department 부서별: Here, departments within a company/office will be classified and something will be done separately for each department.

개인 = personal, individual 개인별 Of course, there are many types of individuals. Here, individuals will be classified and something will be done separately for each person.

국가 = nation 국가별: Here, nations will be classified and something will be done separately for each nation.

These constructions (which are considered nouns) are often placed before other nouns to describe them.

  For example:

수준별 수업 = a class divided by levels 성별 임금 차이 = the difference in wage between the two sexes 학년별 명단 = a list of students names based on grade 부서별 회의 = a meeting for each department 개인별 평가 = an evaluation done for each individual 국가별 언어 설정 = the language setting for each nation

These types of constructions can now be placed in sentences. For example:

수준별 수업은 좋은 점도 있고 나쁜 점도 있어요 = Classes divided by levels have good points and bad points, too

대부분 회사에는 성별 임금 차이가 있어요 = At most companies, there is a wage difference between sexes

개학 전에 우리는 학년별 명단을 작성해야 돼요 = Before the start of school, we need to make a list of students names by grade

각 부서마다 부서별 회의를 할 거예요 = Each department will have a meeting (among themselves)

연말이라서 부서별 회식이 많아요 = It is the end of the year, so there are a lot of staff dinners/parties among departments

here could be many different translations for ~별(로). As you will see in the examples below, it might translate to:

depending on…

I always stress that you try to ignore the English translations. Instead, focus more on my explanation of~별(로) and how its meaning applies to the examples.

우리 회사는 분기별로 세금을 내요 = Our company pays tax by the quarter 코치가 선수들을 체중별로 나눴어요 = The coach divided the athletes by weight 저는 신분증을 나이별로 다 정리했어요 = I organized the ID cards by age

모든 나라가 국가별로 대표를 지명했어요 = Each country designated a representative separately

대륙별로 발견된 공룡들의 무게는 달랐어요 = The weight of dinosaurs was different depending on the continent they were discovered in

사람의 평균 월급은 보통 계급별로 다릅니다 = The average pay/income of a person is different depending on class

아이들을 성별에 따라 대우하는 것이 좋지 않아요 = It’s not good to treat children based on their gender

학생들이 그때 학년별로 강당에서 나올 거예요 = Students will leave the auditorium in the order of grade

우리 가족이 모일 때마다 항상 나이별로 음식을 나눠서 먹어요 = Whenever our family members meet, we always divide the food and eat depending on age

세월이 흐르면서 동물이 종별로 다른 곳으로 이동했어요 = As time goes by, animals move/migrate to different places depending on their species

한국에서는 영어와 수학수업이 보통 수준별로 나눠져요 = In Korea, English and Math classes are usually divided by level

그 문제를 해결하는 방법을 찾으려고 내일 각 부서가 부서별로 회의를 할 거에요 = In order to solve that problem, each department will have a separate meeting

모두 개인별로 자기 생각을 종이에 쓰고 나서 모으자 = Each person write their ideas on a piece of paper separately and then let’s meet

이 동맹을 시작하려면 각 나라마다 국가별로 협약에 동의해야 돼요 = If you want to start this alliance, each country needs to agree to the treaty as a nation

우리는 지금 회사원들에게 직급별로 내용을 배분하도록 하겠습니다 = We will now distribute the materials/content to the workers by rank/level

학생들이 사춘기를 겪고 있기 때문에 학생들을 성별로 나눠서 그 영상을 보여줘야 될 것 같아요 = Because students are going through puberty, we will probably have to divide them by sex and show that video to them

𝐊𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫:  A/N/V-(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라 ✏️𝐔𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞 - This expression is used to indicate that "not only what is stated in the preceding clause, but also what is stated in the following clause". This expression can also be used without 만 as in -(으)ㄹ 뿐 아니라. E.g. 여름은 더울 뿐만 아니라 비도 많이 와요. (The summer is not only hot, but it is also raining often.) ✏️ 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞 (1) When using this expression, if the preceding clause is positive statement, the following clause must also be positive statement, and vice versa. E.g. 영호 씨는 공부를 잘 할 뿐만 아니라 운동도 잘해요. (both positive) (Youngho is not only good at studying but also good at sports.) 그 아파트는 회사에서 멀 뿐만 아니라 아주 시끄러워요.  (both negative) (That apartment is not only far from the company, but it is also very noisy.) (2) When using in past tense, the expression will be 았/었을 뿐만 아니라 E.g. 지난 여름에는 비가 많이 왔을 뿐만 아니라 몹시 더웠어요. (It not only rained a lot last summer, but also very hot.) (3) The expression A/V-기까지 하다 , A/V-기도 하다, and N까지 A/V are often used in the clauses following A/N/V-(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라. E.g. 지수 씨는 예쁠 뿐만 아니라 성격이 좋기까지 해요. = 지수 씨는 예쁠 뿐만 아니라 성격이 좋기도 해요. = 지수 씨는 예쁠 뿐만 아니라 성격까지 좋아요. (Jisoo is not only pretty, but also has a good personality.) (4) This expression can be replace -(으)ㄹ 뿐더러 with without a major change in meaning. E.g. 지하철은 편리할 뿐만 아니라 시간도 절약할 수 있어요. = 지하철은 편리할 뿐더러 시간도 절약할 수 있어요. (Subway is not only convenient but also able to saves time.) (5) When using with Nouns, N(이)다 is forming as N일 뿐만 아니라 while N is forming as 'N뿐만 아니라'. E.g. 편지뿐만 아니라 소포도 받았어요. (I received not only letter but also package.) 혜원 씨는 의사일 뿐만 아니라 작가이기도 해요.
