Scourge of a man
hey :3. i was wondering, which books do you think every writer should read? (young, naive writer here wanting to expand my vocab hehe)
If you’re looking for vocabulary, it depends slightly on what genre you’re aiming to write in. Honestly just reading literary adult novel will probably help you see what sort of vocabulary is expected of writers in traditional publishing (most of it isn’t that advanced, only a few words should have you reaching for a dictionary here and there). Other than that, just read whatever your genre of choice is! There's really no wrong way to expand your vocabulary!
What I will recommend for other aspects of writing is to try to get a sense of the "classics" of every medium and genre.
I personally love Shakespeare for his plots and depth of character. Hamlet and Macbeth are FANTASTIC examples of a work forcing the audience to question what is “real” within a piece. But Shakespeare isn’t the best for everything. Hemingway is incredible in his ability to communicate a story in a stripped down, modern style. He tells you only what you NEED to know (a technique called writing by omission) and whereas Shakespeare might have a lot of flowery language, Hemingway doesn’t give the reader anything he doesn’t have to. I think that Tolkien has magnificent world building and Salinger has excellent portrayals of how age affects the psychology of characters. All authors, books, and genres have different aspects of writing that can be learned from. It’s really just a matter of reading all you can.
Here’s a list of some books and short stories I really like and my favorite thing that can be learned from of each of them:
Shakespeare for Squirrels by Christopher Moore (wonderful example of comedic writing)
Black Swan Green by David Mitchell (super gripping and believable narrator)
Hamlet by Shakespeare (plot and unreliability of a main character)
Macbeth by Shakespeare (unreliability of several main characters and elements of the supernatural)
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (a wonderful example of how to dramatize the mundane)
Hills Like White Elephants by Hemingway (writing by omission)
The Lottery by Shirley Jackson (dramatization and pacing)
If you want any more recommendations or would like to talk about any specific stories with me, just shoot me another ask! (So sorry how long it's taken me to reply, I promise to be more punctual next time.)
Ah, lagi-lagi mengeluh.
Alih-alih merasa terpojokkan oleh tanggung jawab, akan lebih baik jika menjalani dengan ikhlas, berdoa minta dikuatkan, dilapangkan rasa sabar, dan ditenangkan hati juga pikiran. Ilmu berguna, pengalaman bertambah, materi mengalir, berkah, insyaallah.

Learn to create, or learn to deal with the hatred. You do not get to have it both ways.
Of all the things in the world you could choose to do, creating is something that comes with some of the most abundant and accessible teaching resources available. Nearly every artist/writer/crafter has put out some tutorial or another. Millions of them. In every format imaginable. Those who don’t make tutorials are frequently taking on the job of directly teaching people. We want you to learn, to join us in making things. We want you to feel the joy of making something. You were not gatekept from this. You chose the easy way out, and then got mad when people who put the work in said No, we don’t like that you steal from us. We don’t like that you steal and profit from our work. We don’t like that you took our jobs with the theft of our work. And no, you aren’t a part of our community because you aren’t actually creating anything.
You don’t get it both ways. You don’t get to steal from us and be welcomed and loved. But you can still make a choice. A choice that benefits you, and everyone in the community. You can choose to learn how to create. I promise you the reward that you’re looking for, the dopamine hit of attention and completion of work that you’re trying to get. It exists. It’s actually easier to reach than you think. And we will help you every step of the way.
