How I learn writing in English (even if I'm not native)

After years spent ineffectively studying English, until last September I was only able to read, listen and understand. But then I felt the urge to be fluent and confident in speaking and writing (cheers Good Omens, Neil Gaiman, Michael Sheen and David Tennant job!) During the last eight months, I improved a lot. How? Forgetting fears about mistakes and just keep talking and writing (this is a reminder for me, sorry).

Well, maybe speaking is easier because the words fly away and are forgettable. Written words stay to immortal shame. But, to be honest, I don't give a fork. I claim the right to be wrong and learn from my mistakes.

So, here we are.

Tips on writing a character who is learning to read and write?

I suggest thinking about what your school taught you when you were learning how to read and write.

I might need a bit more information, such as what language the character is learning, if they have a (qualified) teacher/tutor, and the situation (aka if they’re a kid learning in grade school or an illiterate adult)

Think back to kindergarten. In my school, we started out writing on gridded lines.

There’s the sky line, the plane line, the grass line, and the worm line. Each letter reached different parts of the line (for example, a capital “A” would start at the grass line, go to the sky line and back, and the line would be on the plane line)

First, we’d copy the letter, following dashed lines, and then we would write it by ourselves. Over and over and over again, repetition is key.

After that, it’s a matter of learning the sounds of the letters and putting them together. Sounding them out using the finger-touch method (with the syllables and stuff)

I don’t really know much else to tell you, but I hope that this was enough to help (and sorry that this is so late!)

On Writing

One of the worst things about being worldbuilder is having one skill, and one skill only. I like to think I am fairly decent in art. I can design a character or a location when needed, but the moment it gets to writing, my max becomes bullet points. I cannot publish a respectable series which conveys the importance of my world with BULLET POINTS. It’s infuriating. Why can’t I, for once in my life, figure out how to write either dialogue, plot, or any sort of narrative. I don’t understand it. I know writing takes practice, but I hate not being good at it. I wish there was a way for me to learn narrative writing like one learns painting. Not just a general “oh this is what you should do, but it’s entirely up to you,” NO! Too vague. I need a step by step how-to like how to block in colors first, then shadows, then highlights, etc, but the writing equivalent. I need examples MADE with said explanation. I want to SEE the process, not just read final products. I think it’s probably best that I start writing shitty little things here and there to improve, but GOD that’s embarrassing. I refuse to be bad at something. I’m gonna have to write in this blog, so apologies in advance.

How to Write A Novel Guides, Notes & Steps

Step 1: Core essence of the story in one sentence. The Lesbian Romance That Saved The World.

Step 2: The first Draft. Inciting Incident, Climax, Resolution.

What is an Inciting Incident? It provokes the hero, it incites them, it creates a before and an after. The inciting incident is the gateway to the action. And like all gateways, it leads from something and it leads to something.

So for my story the inciting incident would be the scene I call the 'Bouquet of Knives' scene.

What is a Climax? Either the Hardest Decsion the protagonist has to make or a moment between the romantic couple before their happily ever after.

So I think for my story my Climax would be the 'If you love Her, Send Her home' scene.

What is a resolution? It's the ending for the story, the part that adds a pretty bow to all the plots and arcs the story went through.

For my story, I think the resolution would be the 'Have Love Not War' scene.

Step 3: Break the Narrative into acts. The Climax should, theoretically, be in the middle. Mine isn't so I suppose it's probably not actually a Climax like I thought. At this stage I think I need to plan out my story some more.
