yes, exactly! and i also feel like people criticize vegans doing the exact same things that they do, too. like i don’t personally own any clothes with animal materials in them but it’s not like i contribute plastic use any more than an average person. most of my stuff is cotton and that’s prob true for everybody because it’s so standard in socks, underwear, t-shirts, jeans, hoodies, etc. i don’t own neither real nor plastic leather (because it’s not like it's common in things other than bags or shoes?). i have rubber-and-canvas shoes, partly-elastane tights, an acrylic scarf bought a decade ago, and fleece-lined gloves, though, but i’m confident that so do the people who reblog the latest anti-vegan post about plastic leather

Yes, vegan leather is bad! Yes, it's just plastic! Yes, it's a greenwashing marketing ploy! And guess what else!
If you think vegans are a large enough marketshare to influence the entire Western garment industry toward vegan leather, you are a moron!
First, "vegan leather" was ALREADY A FUCKING THING! ALREADY A FUCKING POPULAR, WIDE-SPREAD THING! IT WAS CALLED PLEATHER AND VINYL. "Vegan leather" was just rebranding to distance the product from its already infamous shitty quality!
Second, the shift toward vegan leather was NOT fueled by consumer demand because VEGANS DO NOT CONSTITUTE A MEANINGFUL FRACTION OF GARMENT CONSUMERS. Like, sure, in a little niche corner market, I'd buy it, but everyone and their moms started selling vegan leather, and it wasn't because the people were clamoring for pleather! People (myself included) LIKE leather!
The shift was, in fact, fueled by worsening practices in (drum roll please....) THE CATTLE INDUSTRY! Cows' skin thickens with age, so to get a quality hide good enough to make decent, quality leather products, you need a cow that lives to a decent age. The natural lifespan of a cow is 20-30 years. The average lifespan of a dairy cow is 5-6 years. The average lifespan of a beef cow is 18 months. More and more hides are going to landfills, unused, because we kill cows too quickly to get quality hides from them. An 18 month old beef cow’s hide is basically useless.
We're not throwing away hides because of vegan leather. Vegan leather isn't a trend because of vegans. Vegan leather is a trend because we are killing cows too young to produce enough actual leather to meet consumer leather demands.

Received a couple of similar asks from people wondering what the most environmentally friendly alternative to buying regular leather is. It’s kind of a hard question to answer. On a small scale, vegetable tanning with tannins obtained from harvesting invasive species like mimosas could be a good choice to avoid the deforestation of native plants. However, since the dispersal of invasive species is random, it would make harvesting large quantities difficult and expensive, and in theory could require roads to be cleared. It would also still require a lot of water to soak the leather in the tannins and solvents to strip hair from the leather beforehand. I think it’s a good way for individuals and very small businesses to operate but I’m skeptical of larger operations doing it and still remaining comparatively sustainable. There are some businesses that could do re-forestation after harvesting for tannins and would probably be the best real leather to support. Currently, I’m not sure how often this actually happens in the industry, though.
I have not looked into them in detail but there are also true vegan leathers made from things like mushrooms grown in sawdust byproducts from the construction industry. Don’t ask me if this is a large scale solution; I will research it further but right now I don’t know.
Personally, I think the best potentially massed produced “leather” products with the lowest environmental impacts are synthetic leathers made from recycled materials. Water based polyurethane products also seem like a far better option. According to this article,

Firms that make synthetic leather for consumer products have therefore been under pressure to come up with cleaner technology. Those efforts are bearing fruit.
Scientists and engineers at Bayer MaterialScience, for example, are introducing water-based manufacturing technology to make polyurethane synthetic leather for footwear and apparel. The approach avoids the toxic solvent dimethylformamide (DMF) that is currently necessary for making polyurethane synthetic leather. The Bayer process also uses significantly less energy and only a fraction of the water consumed in the conventional process.
Polyurethane is a versatile, inert material used for protective surface coatings on floors, adhesives for wood products, soft foam to pad furniture, hard elastomers for objects such as skateboard wheels, synthetic fibers such as spandex for stretchy clothes, and composites such as synthetic leather. Bayer’s polyurethanes were recently used in several layers of the Brazuca soccer ball prepared for this year’s World Cup.
Global annual production of polyurethane synthetic leather has reached more than 4 billion m2 per year, Bayer’s Smith says. It’s used for applications such as running shoes, clothing, and handbags in which high softness and varied surface texture are desired. Polyvinyl chloride leather tends to be used more for durable applications such as furniture and car seats. About 90% of the polyurethane leather made with the solvent-based processes is produced in China, where it stays and is converted into a variety of consumer goods.
Polyurethane synthetic leather avoids the chemical soup used in the leather tanning process. Polyurethanes are typically made using an amine catalyst to combine a diisocyanate (a toxic reagent that requires careful handling) with a diol. DMF is miscible with water and works well as a solvent for making polyurethanes. But it is absorbed through the skin and has been linked to cancer and birth defects. As chemists have better understood those toxic effects, they have started avoiding the solvent in manufacturing processes.
One option they’re pursuing is switching from DMF-based polyurethane production to a water-based process. Polyurethane dispersion technology that generates polyurethane particles in aqueous solution has already caught on for making adhesives, coatings, and foams. Bayer is now the first to give it a go for making synthetic leather.”
