A year and a half ago, the wonderful @leblonde gave general binding permission for her fics. This is the second in my project to bind some of my favorites
Presenting, "when i sing, you sing harmonies" by leblonde fanbinding:
Gonna wax poetic about my design decisions and future plans under the cut:
I was torn between sticking to a pastel look and feel for the bakery aspect and sticking with the fic's color symbolism (if you don't know: there's magical baked goods, and the feelings they produce correspond to colors). I managed to strike a balance with this fabric from a second-hand craft shop in a peachy color I thought might pass for the color of "musicality." I just happened to have rainbow scrapbook paper, so it went as a stand-in for the color of "happiness"
The bookmark is a little thing I tatted. The white color is of course meant to reference "confidence." I thought the lace detail would fit the frilly look I wanted to invoke the feeling of the bakery.
Fonts are Freestyle Script (headings, for the frilly script) and Garamond (a solid serif for readability). And of course there's a moth on the title page for Dan's aura.
In case you're wondering how long this comes out to in print (quarto, 10 or 11 point font, breaking to a new page where there's scene breaks + a few pages at beginning and end of book info): it's 223. Holy cow. That's a novel. I remain eternally impressed by leblonde's writing
I'm not going to have a chance to bind for a little while (at least until March, with some school obligations I've got going on). I'm hoping to do more journal binding projects next semester for practice and then return to this project after I graduate (probably after July)
I'm sure you remember that anon a few weeks (months?) ago who asked if they could make a book out of your fic when i sing, you sing harmonies
Well it was me and i have done it! So here i present to you the physical version of your wonderful fic!
I’m as well including the steps i followed to bind the book, followed by some process pics i have collected (if anyone even cares ahahhah i’m not sure if book making is a popular thing)
((Also please excuse the excruciatingly poor quality of the pictures, i took them hastily with my phone, oftentimes at night))
Steps to make a book:
1) Print your text document (after making sure the layout will be proper once you fold the pages - feel free to ask me if ur actually interested how to do that lol) OR find some blank paper if you just want a notebook/sketchbook
2) gather the pages in small packs of 7 to 10 pages (or however you chose your printing settings - again, feel free to ask how to do that)
3) fold each pack in half
4) measure + punch holes with a needle at the same place on each pack
5) sew (see yt vid)
6) cut out the cover (see yt vid)
7) cut the edges of your book so it fits in the cover as you’d like (v messy, would be optimal to have one of those giant cutting machines but i only had a poorly sharpened exacto)
8) put some glue on the spine + clips + wait for a day so it dries
9) cut out a piece of fabric to cover the spine you glued yesterday + glue that down + clips + wait one day so it dries
10) put some glue on it on the front and back page and stick it to the cover (see yt vid) + press it down under a shit tonne of books so it stays extra flat + wait a day so it dries
hey!! my questions are about ships that pass in the night because you know how much i love that fic - 3 and 10 please :)
3. The ending was the hardest to write. It was quite difficult to have Phil finally reveal all of his backstory stuff and it was quite an emotional conversation. But also, I just find endings hard in general
10. It was heavily inspired by Following the Fandom by @ineverhadmyinternetphase Apparently I subconsciously copied my fave. And then became her friend. And then realised when I was sat in a Starbucks that she was the one that wrote that fic. It was a really funny moment but also quite embarrassing.
Then I wrote an actor/student AU.... when will the shameless fangirling stop?
YOUR NEW FIC!!! I can’t and I cannot! I knew I’d love it because, hey, it’s you (and it’s also named after a great fall out boy song) but gosh you just - i think every fic of yours is my favourite until i read the next one. i loved it and also you and thank you for blessing us with more amazingness 💜
ahhhhh omg thank you so so much! i’ve been so swamped with writing recently but your prb is BOOKMARKED and im keeping it as a treat for myself because i obviously know it’s going to be overwhelming and perfect. i honestly love you to bits and every time you say you like my writing i die so. yeah. <3 <3 xxx
1. Do you have a preference for which pov to write from between Dan and Phil, and why?
recently, i’ve been really enjoying writing things from phil’s pov since i can definitely relate to his anxiety issues and i’ve been really enjoying the challenge since we don’t get to see quite as much of the inner phil as we get of dan! for longer things, though, i’m naturally more drawn to dan? maybe because i have a Thing for writing dysfunctional families and i love delving into his backstory in AUs :)
2. What’s your favorite line of dialogue you’ve ever written for Dan or Phil?
“Them, Phil. Gender neutral pigeons.”
& because i can’t choose
“You’ll never be a failure to me, Phil. You hear me? Not after everything you’ve given me and millions of others. Four million people want to watch your videos. At least a quarter of them are gonna want to see our show. You need to see these people as much as I do.”
& you know what i’m not even sorry for this
“Daaannnn. You know you don’t have to do this. But thank you.”
“Of course I do. How else can I thank someone for giving me the last eight years of their life?”
“Eight years?” If Dan wasn’t awake already, the snatches of breath tickling his neck sure did the trick. “I think you can do a bit better than coffee, babe. Something...furry, perhaps?”
Dan almost poured the scalding pot over his hands. “Are you telling me it’s finally time for your fursuit? I always knew this day would come, Phil!”
“Fuck. Don’t listen to pre-coffee Phil. Furry was the wrong word and you know it.”
