Fic idea:
Boston's head coach LeClair and Ottawa's head coach Weibe used to be teammates on the Bears when they were still active players - LeClair left the Voyageurs (who had drafted him) once he became a free agent, and Weibe spend his first few years in the League there, where they met and became somewhat unlikely big bro-little bro type friends. Either is unaware that they have more in common than just being Canadian, something a lot more dangerous: both men are not exactly straight.
At the start of Weibe's second year on the team (so he'd have been baby rookie aged), early season, the Bears play the Admirals in NYC. The Bears win in over time. A little drunk, and a lot typically teenage reckless Weibe goes out to celebrate with the other rookies despite their Captain, and LeClair (the alt) forbidding them from leaving their hotel since the NY crowd was particularly rowdy after the game.
Weibe gets separated from the group, and heads to a gay bar he heard about.
LeClair is back at the hotel hanging out with his good buddy Admirals player Harvey Murdock (who is one of the few people who knows about LeClair's sexuality), entirely unaware his small town raised, underage, (secretly baby queer) rookie isn't in bed,and trying to cruise in Manhattan in the middle of the night.
Until he gets a frantic, terrified payphone call from the kid. He's managed to get to a 24h convenience store but he says he feels drugged,he's bleeding pretty bad,he's crying, and apologizing over and over.
LeClair and Murdock immediately rush to get to the kid,and protect/shield him in the aftermath.
Aka how LeClair,Murdock and Weibe became some of the few good men who would protect their own LGBTQIA+ players come hell or high water.
This could make a compelling intertwined story for an AU where the Voyageurs were even worse to Shane, especially if that also involved a physical assault hate crime.
