Leo: Raph, you gonna help me carry this chair in for Elaina or what?
Raph: Are you seriously putting this nasty old chair in her room? Didn't you find it by the trash?
Leo: I cleaned it! Come on, just sit in it! See? *sits in the chair, crosses legs, taps the arms proudly* It's got a lot of life left in it.
Raph: Oh, hey, Elaina. Leo was just-- What? Where'd he go?
Leo: *absolutely panicked, hiding behind her bedroom door*
Elaina: Oh, wow! Look at that chair! *proceeds to sit in the chair, crosses legs, taps the arms proudly* It's got a lot of life left in it!
Raph: Great. There's two of them. 🙄
Leo: *whispers* I love you.
Elaina: Huh? What did you say?
Leo: Oh, sorry! I-I said I owe you.
Elaina: *squints suspiciously* I swear you said--
Leo: Nope! Definitely said I owe you, haha, never mind. What's that over there? *blushing fifty shades of red, running away from his feelings*
"Surface Tension" Chapter 18 - Worth Fighting For: Protection

“Get… out… of… here,” Leo groans.
Elaina gasps and pulls back just enough to see his face, still keeping him shielded from the flames. “Leo!” She says in relief, tears pricking the corner of her eyes.
His labored breathing forces short sentences, and he blinks his eyes partially open, squinting from the pain. “Get… away… from me…now…”
“Shut up and stay down,” Elaina raps out, quickly dismissing his words. "I'm not going anywhere."
I've been working on this drawing for weeks! I was worried it was going to be an unfinished WIP, but then I felt inspired today. This is by far one of my favorite scenes that really shows Elaina's instinct to self-sacrifice (sound like anyone else we know? *cough* Definitely not Leo, pshhh, don't know what you're talkin' about...).
There's a massive explosion, and without hesitation, she throws herself over Leo's body to protect him from the flames (and rubble). It could've been a lot worse, but thankfully, they were both already far enough from the blast, so no one sustained significant burns. Just a few singes here and there on the back of Elaina's kunoichi uniform. But in her mind, she was ready to protect him, no matter the cost. She would burn to keep him safe. And he would walk through fire to save her.
Surface Tension AU Mini Rant!
Ugh, man, I feel like this scene I just drafted is just so intimate in a wholesome and real relationship kind of way. They're finding their way back to each other, Leo and Elaina. This is what real love can look like sometimes, especially after hurt. I love their dynamic. Leo's grown up so much, and he's taken on so many responsibilities now being the head of the clan, being the head of his family, a father figure even. It's a lot for a 19 year old to bare, mutant ninja turtle or not. And he's never been in love or been coached much on love, or even witnessed what a loving relationship looks like. He's trying his best to navigate these very massive emotions, even biological changes, and show the reader (AKA Elaina) that he actually does value her, trust her, and care for her in ways he can't describe. He wants his whole life to be spent at her side, whether she makes the decisions he wants her to make or not. He just wants her and all of her, in any and all ways she would let him. And it took those months of distance for him to realize just how true it was. He had to let her go to see if she'd choose to come back to him, choose to take him for all his flaws and beauty, and that's exactly what she does.
Elaina: I don't know how to stop needing you...
Leo: Who said you ever had to?
Leo: Elaina and I are just friends.
Donnie: Are you sure she feels that way?
Mikey: Bro, she's totally got the hots for you!
Raph: Seriously, how clueless can you be?
Leo: I don't know guys, there's just no way Elaina likes me like that. We're just friends.
Elaina: Leo, you're the best thing that's ever happened to me.
Leo: See, yeah, I'm still not too sure.
