Korean Questions ~ㅂ/습니까; ~니 🇰🇷 Lesson 21 Part 2/5
You can never use ~습니다 as a question. Instead you have to use ~ㅂ/습니까. You can use ~ㅂ/습니까 with all tenses:
~ㅂ/습니까 is typically the most formal way to ask a question.
Instead of ending a question in ~아/어 you can end them with ~니. This is an informal way to ask questions that you can use with all tenses. Keep in mind that this form gives a sentence a slightly feminine feel.
Examples with different tenses:
Present tense: 하니, 먹니, 가니, 이니
Future tense (~겠): 하겠니, 먹겠니, 가겠니
Future tense (~ㄹ 것이다): 할 거니, 할 것이니, 먹을 거니, 먹을 것이니
The ㄹ irregular with ~니: the ㄹ irregular is the only irregular that applies as a result of adding ~니. When adding ~니 to a word that ends in ㄹ, you remove ㄹ and directly attach ~니. Ex: 열다 + ~니 = 여니. (Every time a grammatical particle where a solid ㄴ is attached, this same rule is applied.)
I’m posting these notes for myself, for ease of studying. All information is from the awesome website howtostudykorean.com. This is from Lesson 21: (x).
Again, since these notes are for myself, I didn’t put translations to the Korean sentences. If someone happens to read this and wants translations, go to where I linked in the previous paragraph and there you go!
